Thanks for making that clear, Sharon. Since it is SO confusing, I should
also
state that John Boyd Wells' grandson, Dudley, was the son of Lemuel Wells.
Though I have never seen John D. Wells middle name spelled out, the fact
that he and his sister Mary D. Wells seem to be the only children with
middle initials leads me to believe that the "D." stands for "Downing"
their
mother's maiden name. This is also supported by the entry for a John Downing
Wells at
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=elessar5&a...
I believe the evidence points to this man being the son of Levi Wells, son
of John D. and Rachel (Wells) Wells. I emailed the owner of the database but
didn't get a reply. The names MIGHT indicate that Mary Downing's father's
name was John, not particularly helpful. Mary Downing Wells could have been
named after her mother, rather than her grandmother. These are only clues,
however.

The Levi Wells that married Patience Ridlen was the son of John Boyd
Wells
who settled in Jefferson County, Indiana about 1815-1820.
