Hi John, I don't know where you got your census information but someone has
mixed up the 1850 and 1860 censuses. This is the 1850 Federal Census of
Harlan Co., KY:
CENSUS YR: 1850 STATE: Kentucky COUNTY: Harlan DIVISION: Dist. No. 1
REEL NO: M432-203 PAGE NO: 18
REFERENCE: 24 July 1850 by Abner Crump (Sheet 10A)
13 7 7 Wells Thomas 50 M Black Smith 300
Virginia
14 7 7 Wells Mahala 44 F
North Carolina
15 7 7 Wells Elizabeth 11 F

16 7 7 Wells Martha 8 F

17 7 7 Wells Peggy 5 F

18 7 7 Wells Jemima 2 F

Virginia
38 10 10 Wells Elizabeth 24 F
Virginia
39 10 10 Wells Charles J 3 M
Virginia
40 10 10 Wells Mary A 5/12 F
Kentucky
The 1860 Federal Census of Wise Co., VA, Big Stone Gap
p. 9 has the following:
545 Wells Thomas 60 m Farmer 162
Mahala 53 f Housekeeper Illiterate
Elizabeth 21 f Seamstress Illiterate
Mahala 18 f Seamstress School
Margaret 15 f School
Jemima 12 f School
Wells James B. 58 m
Born blind
Rebecca 22 f Seamstress
Samuel 20 m
Born blind
This is Thomas Wells and his brother James B. "Blind Jim" Wells, sons of
Zachariah Wells Jr. and Rebecca Shephard. Except for the Mahala/Martha
substitution this appears to the same family in the 1850 Census of Harlan
Co., KY. Thomas Wells married Mahala Taylor, 29 Apr 1823, in Scott Co., VA
(Scott Co. Marriage Book 2). The only lists of children I have seen starts
with Elizabeth so there is almost a 15 year gap which suggests any surviving
older children are "missing". Wise Co. was formed from parts
of Russell, Lee and Scott in 1856 but Thomas and his family were not
enumerated in any of these counties in 1850.

I am trying to find out Heirum's parents but having no luck.
Orin Wells has given me information on the Kentucky Census of Adair
County,
KY in 1860 and it shows both the Heirum Wells family:
The census for 1860 shows:
Margarett Holt 64 b: NC
Hiram Wells 35 b: Lee Co., Virgina (this may hint at a connection to the
Zachariah Wells family of Lee county)
Elizabeth Wells 34 b: Lee Co., VA
Charles J. Wells 12 b: Lee Co., VA
Mary Jane Wells 11 b: Harlan Co., KY
Margarett Wells 8 b: Harlan Co., KY
William T. Wells 5 b: Harlan Co., KY (the "T" could be an "F")
Martha A. Wells 3 b: Adair Co., KY
as well as another Wells family only 3 doors down that he is confident is
from the Zachariah Wells line:
Thomas Wells 50 b: VA
Mahala Wells 44 b: NC
Elizabeth Wells 11 b: VA
Martha Wells 08 b: VA
Peggy Wells 05 b: VA
Jemima Wells 02 b: VA
Orin also stated:
"Jemima (Sturgill) Wells was a daughter of Zachariah Wells and Abigail
Osborn and I am thinking probably a great-aunt of your Hiram. Thomas
Wells
was probably a nephew of Jemima and it is possible the father of
Hiram,
but see below.
This probably means your Hiram was a great-grandson of Zachariah.
Through DNA testing we have demonstrated that this family and several
previously not known to be related are all somehow connected to Thomas
Wells (b: Cir 1656) and Frances _____ of Maryland. I am thinking Hiram
may
have been a son of William T. Wells b: cir 1797 in Lee Co., VA m:
Rebecca
Shephard. William T. Wells was a son another Thomas Wells b: cir 1770 Lee
Co., VA who married Rebecca Blevins. But this leaves a question about who
Margaret Holt was. Could she have been an aunt of Hiram or possibly the
mother or aunt of Elizabeth?"
Hopefully, someone here will see something that matches what they have so
I
can leave this brick wall and head for another one :)
Thank you very much in advance.
