Subject: [Zachariah Wells] Great New Resource
Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 15:59:09 -0700
The following was posted on another list I monitor. This sounds like a
tremendous resource for all the Wells researchers who are stuck and looking
for another hint and can not get to the LDS library in Salt Lake City. I
know there are some I am going to be looking for. There should be a LOT of
family histories and local histories that will be a gold mine.
You may receive multiple copies if you are subscribed to multiple Wells
lists.
For those who have been wondering if there is any progress on the DNA
project, the answer is yes! We continue to push forward with nearly 410
participants at this point and a couple of side projects who have some
relation to Wells. I need to do an update to the web site with the current
test results
Bonita Hillmer and I are working our way through the genealogies related to
the DNA testing and these will start coming on-line shortly. I will notify
you all when they are there. We can also use volunteers to review the
genealogies before we release them. I am particularly interested in
researchers who are connected to the baseline families but don't have a
surrogate to test. We want to make sure we get it as close to right the
first time. Let me know if you would like to help.
If you have genealogies related to any of the tested families and are not
in the testing, we would welcome your files to integrate with the ones we
do have. Please send any gedcom files you would like to have included.
Please make sure your name, address, phone number and email are in the
gedcom files so we know who to contact if we have questions. This
information will NOT be part of the genealogies on the web site but it will
be possible for people to contact researchers connected to these families
through blind emails. So if you want to be listed as a researcher on a
family, please let me know.
Now I will go remove all the email addresses of people who have changed
addresses and not re-subscribed that are going to bounce today as a
consequence of this message.

NOW SEARCH OVER 600 BOOKS WHICH THE FAMILY HISTORY
LIBRARY HAS ONLINE.
In Sept. 2005, the LDS Family History Library announced that it has begun
the process of digitizing & making available on the Internet ALL of the
Family History books in their collection. At that time, about 5000 books
were available, and they were adding about 100 titles a week. Books out of
copyright are being done first.
The images of these Family History books are actually being stored on the
electronic servers at Brigham Young University. By going directly to the
BYU website to view the images, you are able to full-text searches on each
book. You can now locate the small entry on your elusive grandpa that is
buried in one of the books that you would otherwise never thought to look
at before.
HOW TO FIND THE DIGITIZED IMAGES
Go to the website of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU at:
<
http://www.lib.byu.edu/
On their home page follow the links
"Find Other Materials/
Then: "Electronic/
Then: "On Line Collections at BYU."
Click on the "Text Collections" tab & select the
"Family History Archive" from the list of collections that are displayed.
You would then normally want to use the "Search All" feature with the
"Search All Text" box checked, although the "Advanced Search" will
allow
very high-powered searches that will allow certain phrases to be searched
for & other words to be used to exclude potential hits.
As you make selections from the "hits" that are displayed, you will need to
use the "Click Here To View Item" button near the top of the screen to
display the actual image of the page. You can page through the entire
document using the index displayed on the left side of the screen. Each
page may be printed after being viewed. One interesting sidelight is, when
you are at the first web page for the Family History Archive, click on the
"Browse the Collection" button. This will display every Family History book
that has been digitized and is available in the collection. You can scroll
through this list much the same as if you were walking up & down the stacks
at the library."

When you first log onto: <

there are loads of other links to check out, too, as well as more links on
2nd page as well. Also, the "Text Collections" page lists lots of other
books,sources and resources!
