Zachariah Wells is included in John Montgomerie's list in the 1773 tax list for
Fincastle
County, VA, with his tax paid by William Herbert. This indicates that he was an employee
of Herbert at the time. William Herbert was a wealthy landowner who operated several
mines in Fincastle County. Also in the same tax district were many members of the
Blevins, Boggs, Osborn, Pennington, and Ward families are listed. Many of these same
men ended up in Wilkes County a few years later. In addition, the Soldiers of Fincastle
County, Virginia - 1774, by Mary B. Kegley, 1974, page 68, lists Zachariah Wells
as a "scout" in the Fincastle Co. Militia in 1774. Again, several members of
the
Osborn, Ward, Blevins, and Pennington families are also include, with the same names
as men who migrated to Wilkes Co., NC, a few years later.
