Hello to all list members,
I keep hoping that someone will solve the Zachariah Wells mystery. I
have read in many places that Zachariah was the son of Richard Wells and
Nancy Brown. If this is not correct how did so many sources get the same
information? In a publication by the Letcher County (KY) Historical and
Genealogical Society called "Family Histories of Letcher County" the
following is listed:
ZACHARIAH WELLS (s/o Richard Wells and Nancy Brown) b. 1739 in MD; d. ca
1825 in Big Stone Gap, VA; was a Rev. War Soldier; m. 1770 to ABIGAIL
OSBORNE (d/o James Osborne and Mary Whitaker).
Children:
1. THOMAS WELLS m. Rebecca Blevins
2. NANCY WELLS b. 7 Dec 1773; d. 20 Feb 1854; m. John O. Boggs.
3. JEREMIAH WELLS b. 1792; d 8 Nov 1845; m. Elizabeth Culbertson.
4. ZACHARIAH WELLS m. Rebecca Shepherd.
5. WILLIAM WELLS m. Susan Ward.
6. ROBERT WELLS m. Elizabeth Shepherd.
7. JACOB WELLS m. Johannah Shepherd.
8. JEMIMA WELLS b. 1781; d. 15 Mar 1856 in Letcher Co., KY m. John
Sturgill
9. ABIGAIL WELLS m. William Landers.
10. ELIZABETH WELLS m. Thomas Landers.

This two volume set of family histories has been an extremely valuable
tool as I research my family history. It has quite a few families listed
from Wilkes, Ashe, and Rowan Co. NC. and also Lee, Scott, and Wise Co.
VA. The information was gathered from families living in Letcher Co.
Ky., however, the accuracy is not guaranteed. A source person is listed
at the end of each family entry.
John and Jemima Sturgill's descendants are pretty well represented in
Volume II.
I descend from William Wells and Susan Ward. I have found nothing at all
about Susan Ward, but I do have a little on William and his son Jeremiah
Wells who married Mary "Polly" Day.
My information on William came from Martha Heinemann who is, I believe,
still actively researching the William Wells line. She told me she is
filing her information at the Letcher County Historical Society in the
Harry Caudill Library on Main Street in Whitesburg, KY. if anyone is
interested.
I think we should post queries on county lists or historical society
newsletters to people with the name of Shepherd, Boggs, Culbertson,
Sturgill, Landers or Landreth, Lewis, Brown, Day, Creech, Stidham,
Bagwell, and others known to have married into the Wells family. Someone
may have
good family records hidden away somewhere.
I plan to do a lot of research in the Virginia and east Kentucky records
this fall when my youngest daughter goes to kindergarten. I will post
anything I find to the list. If anyone knows of cemeteries I could
search for names and dates between Bristol VA and East Kentucky let me
know.
Also, please share your information with me. I'm interested in all family
lines related to Zach Sr. I have other family lines that came from the
New River area of NC and VA
