Thanks for looking. I go to Ashland on occasion. Do you recall the source?
As for the version put forth by Judge Wells, it has been proved wrong by
many Wells researchers. He tried to bring together too many Wells branches.
We suspect that his souce the good ole M.L.K. Wells.

I have searched all of my papers and can not find a copy of the Zachariah
version I referenced. My husband told me his memory is that I did not take a
copy of it. I believe we found it at the public library in Ashland KY. We do
plan to make a trip to KY later this summer and I will attempt to find it
again. Sorry, but I will keep you posted.
One good thing is, I came across a copy I had made while at Clinch Valley
College in Wise, VA. It is from a book titled "Early History of Wise County
Virginia" by Hugh L. Sulfridge published in 1929. In part, it reads:
"These Powell Valley settlers, some of them at least, were people who had
attempted to follow Boone into Kentucky; but, finding the journey long and
difficult, they stopped and built their log cabins in Powell Valley. For
example, by this route came Richard Wells from the lowlands of North
Carolina, about the year 1792. (at this point there is reference to a footnote
that reads "Wells, Judge T.J. Wise, Va. Notes on Wells Family and Organization
of Wise County, in interview.")
It then goes on : "Bringing with him a large family, he settled in upper
Powell Valley in the present limits of Wise County. William Wells, who was
probably one of the sons of Richard Wells, was one of the first men to
purchase land in Wild Cat Valley............."
It then goes on to refer to Zachariah Wells, another of the sons of Richard,
purchased land on Looney's Creek in 1805. In total, it lists Zachariah,
William, Robert and Jeremiah and refers to all of them as brothers. As I
understand it, they are all brothers, but are the sons of Zachariah, not
Richard.
Does anyone out there have any thoughts on this or know where I can find any
additional information on this interview with Judge Wells?
