Hi Lucille,
Thanks for the info. I have my doubts about Zachariah Wells being a
Quaker. Unless he converted later, a number of Wells of Lee Co were
members of the Three Forks Primitive Baptist Church and his son William was
a very active traveling minister. Also, he was a militia member in the
early 1770s. I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about the
religious influences in the lives of these people though. Perhaps it was
okay to fight Indians and not okay to fight in the Revolution. Was Micajah
Pennington ever identified as a Quaker? It seems that many of his
relatives took up arms. I haven't tried to figure out where Micajah was in
the 1770s. I have tried locating Zack for the 1774-1778 period hoping it
would shed some light, but so far have been unsuccessful.
Well, there are a lot of questions but I am sure we will find the answers
eventually.
John

John O,
I found the information about Solomon being killed by Indians while on a
hunting trip with Enoch in a publication by Rita Kennedy Sutton called
Early Osbornes and Allys. According to the author Capt. Enoch Osborne
married Jane Hash d/o John in 1764. Caleb Osborne was believed to have
come from N.J.
There was also a reference that said Bishop Francis Asbury talked of
visiting Enoch Osborne and another nominal member of the Society of
Friends (Quaker). I'm not sure if this means Enoch was a member of the
Society. If he was he must have been a nominal member also since he was
a Capt. in the Revolution. I think this religious influence may have
been the reason Zachariah was associated with the Torys. Macajah
Pennington, at one time a neighbor of Zach, was also accused of being a
Tory and left the area but later came back and prospered according to
information I was sent by a Pennington researcher. At least one of
Micajah's sons settled in Lee Co on the North Fork of the Powell River.
Another note of interest--when Enoch Osborne, Sr died his property was
divided among these peope: George and Polly Howell, Moses and Sarah
Dixon, Joshua and Ruth Cox, Samuel Robinett and Ann, Enoch and Polly
Osborn, ZACHARIAH AND POLLY OSBORN, Charles Copeland and wife, Samuel and
Rebecca Cox.
This all came from the above mentioned publication except for the
Pennington information.
