That Francis Stogil is indeed Francis STURGILL who married Rebecca HASH (d/o
John and Rebecca Anderson Hash). Their oldest son, John STURGILL married
Jemima WELLS and their youngest daughter, Nancy STURGILL, married Andrew
OSBORNE.
Francis STODGHILL/STURGILL was a Rev. War vet, but he died before the
enactment of the pensions. His widow never claimed a pension either.
Interesting to think that a Rev. War vet's son would marry a Tory
sympathizer's daughter. I know a lot of those OSBORN(E)s fought in the war
also.

Subject: Zachariah/Enoch Osborne
Hi everybody!
A quick report on what I found today at the library. I think we can
safely say that the Zachariah Wells found in Wilkes Co, NC from around 1778
to about 1799 was the same Zachariah found in Fincastle Co, VA 1772 to
around 1774.
The reason I conclude that is based mostly on following up what John Wells
has previously mentioned -- watch the names. These old boys stayed
together and moved on together. The Tithable List for Botetourt Parish,
Fincastle Co., VA for 1772-1773 (Vol 25 #1 of the Magazine of Virginia
Genealogy, published by the Virginia Gen. Soc.) shows Zachariah Wells
(Harbert to pay) and Ezekial Young (Harbert to pay). It has been mentioned
before that these two were employees of Harbert's. Furthermore on this
list we find Enoch, Ephraim, Stephen, Jonathan and Robert Osborn, John and
William Hash, and Wiliam Landreth.
In "Montgomery County, The First 10 Years" by Judge C.W. Crush, 1982 I
found a roster of Capt Enoch Osborn's company 5 Dec 1777. Notable names
include Ezekial Young, William Landreth, Jonathon Hash, Francis Stogil
(Sturgil?) Stephen, Jonathon, Ephraim, Ephraim Jr and Stephen Osborn Sr.
and Joshua Pennington. Daniel Blevins is in another unit. On a roster of
the Montgomery County Militia, Capt Enoch Osborn's company April 1781
included Thomas & William Hash, Robert & Timothy Pennington, William
Landreth, and Robert, John, & Jeremiah Osborn.
As mentioned before, Enoch Osborn's wife's maiden name was Hash. John, do
you have a source on this? We see Enoch signing a deed as a witness with
Zack in Wilkes Co in 1790. We also see a number of Penningtons, and
William Landreth married Zack's daughter Abigail. I copied a bunch of
Wilkes Co tax lists today as well for 1787 to 1799. I need to look them
over still, but it should come as no surprise that these Osborn boys are
living near Zack, Solomon and Enoch not appearing until 1789.
I am curious as to why we don't see Zack serving with everybody else.
Where was he from 1774 to 1778? Could it have something to do with the
Tory Zack who was hanged in Wilkes Co? Well let me get back at it. As
always, if I have anything you want a copy of let me know. In theory, I
can scan it and send it.
