Hi Bev, You live in the right place to research James Shepherd . He was an
early settler of Jackson Co., Mo. I don't know a lot about him but he died
intestate in Jackson Co. & in a book of Wills & Adm. of Jackson Co, Mo
James Shepherd Sr. - died inestate. Adm., John P. Shepherd, 22 July 1853.
(GI:174) Sec., George W. WIlls, James McMurry & John Boggs.
Heirs: his children: John P., William, James & Jonathan Shepherd, living in
Jackson Co. And Enoch & Nimrod Shepherd, and his daughters, Johannah Wiles &
Rachel Mitchum in Andrew Co. and the children of Levi Shepherd & the children
of Elizabeth Wills (Wells) (GI:355)
In History Of Jackson Co., Mo. by Hickman it states James Shepherd was givin
the contract to build the first court house. It was built out of logs. James
had a family of slaves and they went by the name of Sam & Pete Shepherd.
There is a neat story about Sam & Pete.
An other researcher stated James had a large store house to outfit waggon
trains but a flood wiped him out.
1850 census, James Shepherd, 83, farmer, $4000., N.C. Do you think you could
get a copy of GI: 355 ? I don't know if is still at Independence or only at
state archives.
I will send copy of death record. I hope they don't mind Shepherd info on
Wells list.
all for now Roger Kennedy
