Notes for ZACHARIAH WELLS, SR.:
Zachariah Wells was in Wilkes Co, North Carolina in 1778 when he entered 200
acres in the county lying on New River...between his and Micajah Pennington's
land...9th September (N 368) 1788, March 31 - Micajah Pennington conveyed 100
acres of land, beginning on the North side of New River...in Wilkes County,
NC to Zachariah Wells for 80 pounds.

Eventually he migrated to Lee County, Virginia, prior to 1799, where he
purchased 900 acres of land, lying on both sides of Powell River, from Robert
Preston of Washington County, May 3, 1799, for $1,000. (DBK A, p. 315).
1814, April 21 - 120 acres surveyed for Zachariah Wells, Sr. Entry made
December 18, 1812 assigned to him by John Preston - South side of Stone
Mountain below Big Stone Gap.
Zachariah Wells, Sr. continued to acquire land, lying on the waters of Powell
River, in the general area of three forks (Big Stone Gap), and then selling
much of it to others by name of Wells, presumably his sons, but no proof to
confirm the relationship as of 1975 (Early Settlers of Lee Co, Va, p. 1076).
1819, December 22 - Zachariah Wells, Sr. conveyed land, by deed from Robert
Preston and Isaac Burkholder, dated March 11, 1801...to Isaac Burkholder of
Botetourt County... (DBK 4, p. 35).
1807, October 1 - Zachariah Wells assignee of James Shepherd 100 acres, lying
at the mouth of Looneys Creek in the Big Stone Gap (Entry BK One, p. 165).
Deed Book 3, Page 461 - 6 Dec. 1819:
"Zachariah Wells to Robert Wells, both of Lee County, Virginia, a tract of
land lying near Three Forks of Powell river...for $375..."
Deed Book 5, Pages 438, 440 - 1 March and 3 March 1827 -
"Robert Wells and Elizabeth his wife conveyed two tracts of land, one to
William Elkins...100 acres for $300...part of two tracts patented to John
Breckenridge and Zachariah Wells, Sr....conditional line between Robert and
Jacob Wells...
Robert Wells and Elizabeth his wife to George Neithercut...land lying on the
south side of Powell river at Three Forks...being part of a tract patented to
John Breckenridge and conveyed by him...100 acres for $200..."

Deed Book 4, Page 13 - 31 March 1819 -
"Zachariah Wells sold to Jacob Wells for $1.00...part of land granted by the
Commonwealty 1 March 1791 to John Breckenridge and Robert Preston...to
Zachariah Wells...150 acres..."
Deed Book 3, Page 2 - 25 August 1812 -
"Zachariah Wells and Rebecca his wife of Russell County and State of Virginia
to Charles West of Lee County, Virginia, 100 acres lying on the North fork of
Powell River in Lee County...crossing Luney's Creek...for 40 pounds..."
Deed Book 5, Page 381 - 21 August 1826 -
"Zachariah Well, Sen. to Jacob Wells...for $100...land lying on the North
side of Powell river below three forks...125 acres granted to Zachariah Wells
by the Commonwealth...60 acres part of a grant 1819..."
Deed Book 5, Page 355 - 15 April 1826 -
"William Wells and Susannah his wife to John Kelly and Travis Horton...100
acres lying on the waters of Powell river in the Wild Cat Valley which tract
was granted to James Shepherd by patent, 6 August 1810 and conveyed to said
William Wells by James Shepherd...for $370..."

Deed Book 5, Page 363 - 17 June 1826 -
"Zachariah Wells, Sr. to Robert Well both of Lee County, Virginia for
$100...land in Lee County near the three forks of Powell river granted to
Zachariah Wells by patent date 30 Dec. 1819...conditional line between Robert
Wells and Jacob Wells."
