Since everybody likes and needs to document things... here's a little bit of
my documentation. Wise Co., VA formed in 1856 listed a John R. Shepherd as
one of its early settlers... his son Henderson signed the petition to form
the county. There are two John Shepherds listed in the 1830 Lee County VA
Federal Census, one is most likely the John mentioned above because his
family lived in that area and I've noticed a few familiar names there. In
the 1810 Lee County VA Personal Property Tax List, I see John Riley's
father's name but not him because he was underage at the time (15). Nancy
(Wells) Boggs would have been in her 30's at the time. John Boggs was
mentioned in this 1810 Tax List.
Also another question, since families were close in those days, who are all
these Wells mentioned in the 1830 Lee County VA Federal Census:
Wells, Jeremiah
Wells, Jeremiah
Wells, John
Wells, Levy
Wells, Richard
Wells, Robert
Wells, Thomas
Wells, William
Wells, William
Wells, Zachariah
I recognize a few of them, but who is Richard Wells... was he a son of
Zachariah?
Another question. One of the files I was sent from someone says:
Wm C. Shepherd 1794VA md Sarah Wells 1800, d/o Zachariah Wells &
Elizabeth Osborne
I know William C. Shepherd married a Sarah Wells, just not sure whose
daughter she was. Abigail?/Elizabeth? Osborne Wells would have probably
been past her birthing days or near the end of her birthing days, so I don't
think it was her daughter.
I found William (who by the way is John Riley Shepherd and Rebecca
Shepherd's brother) and Sarah in the 1850 Perry County, Kentucky Census:
?8-61 William C. SHEPPARD, 53, M, Farmer, 500, VA, *
Sarah, 50, F, VA, *
Thomas, 21, M, VA, *
William, 19, M, VA
Alexander, 17, M, VA
John, 15, M, VA
Rebecca, 13, F, VA
Ira, 10, M, VA
Sarah, 8, F, VA
Henry, 6, M, VA
---------------
* means they can't read or write
Ira, William, and Thomas must have been popular names among the Wells family
at this time.
I know a few Shepherd/Wells moved to Perry County, Kentucky in the 1850's
and 1860's.
59-62 Elihu WELLS, 31, M, Farmer, 500, VA
Elizabeth, 31, F, NC, *
Rebecca, 12, F, VA
Larkin, 10, M, VA
Ira, 8, M, VA
Mary, 5, F, VA
Nancy, 4, F, VA
William, 2, M, VA
Sarah, 2/12, F, VA
---------------
I believe this is the same Elihu Wells in the file I was sent:
Rev. Elihu Wells 1818VA md Elizabeth Kilburn 1818NC, d/o
Martin Kilburn
Elihu Wells was the son of William T. Wells 1798NC-1878 and Rebecca Shepherd
1798-1865.
If you want any more confusing information, just respond...
