There are several problems here. We can trace the Zachariah Wells of Loudoun
Co., VA to Tennessee and Kentucky where he was listed as a vet. He applied
for his Rev. pension as a resident of Sullivan Co., Tennessee, while at the
same time the other Zachariah was living in Lee Co., VA. The Sullivan Co.
tax lists include him while at the same time the Lee Co. tax lists also
include the other Zachariah! In addition, the D.A.R. Patriot Index lists
Zachariah as a North Carolina soldier with a wife named Abigail and that he
died ca. 1827. The Sullivan Co. Zachariah died in the 1830's in KY and never
served in North Carolina. According to his pension application, he served in
only VA units. I suspect we're dealing with two different men. However, that
does not remove the fact that North Carolina sources claim that the Tory
Zachariah died at the hands of "patriots."

There is a pension application (S 39119) for a Zachariah Wells. He
enlisted
in Loudoun Co VA 28 July 1776. I believe this is the soldier mentioned in the
Patriot Index. There is no proof that this is our Zachariah Wells, though.
I do have something I found at Clinch Valley College Library that states
Tazwell Wells stated in an interview that Zachariah was a revolutionary War
Soldier. I know that is flimsey evidence and would certainly make for a good
story, but may be a clue.
