Regarding my earlier posting to the list:
On the note about John P. Wells, I mean to say wouldn't his being born
around 1804 make him much younger than the other children of Zach?
Don, do you have anything to document John Preston Wells as Zachariah
Sr.'s son?
Here are some more notes from the marriage register of Wise Co. VA:
William Wells (age 19) to Clarinda Shepherd (age 25) on Feb 10, 1866.
William listed as son of Solomon Wells and Elizabeth. Clarinda is listed
as daughter of Andrew Shepherd and Sarah.
William Wells, age 17 from Letcher Co. KY son of Henry and Ruth Wells to
Martha Riggs, 18 on Aug 20, 1885.
Susannah Wells, age 16, daughter of Ellington Wells and Elizabeth to W.T.
Bishop, son of J. and Louisa Bishop, on April 9, 1884. Married by J. C.
Wells.
David Stidham, age 60, son of Adam and Abigail Stidham, to Mary J. Gilly,
age 40, of Scott Co. VA, daughter of William Smith on April 18, 1881.
David Stidham, age 19, son of James and Malinda Stidham, to Leennah
Wampler, age 19, daughter of Israel and Abrigail Wampler on August 18,
1865.
Nancy Elkins, daughter of John and Elizabeth Elkins married John Bray on
September 28, 1865.
Other interesting information from the Annals of Southwest Virginia by
Lewis Preston Summers:
Page 663--On June 19, 1774, William Herbert listed as a Grantee of 213
acres of land on the North side of New
River, opposite Poplar Camp Creek. This is listed in
the First Surveys of land in Fincastle Co. VA.
(* My note: Poplar Camp is near the border of Wythe
and Carroll Counties in Virginia. Looking in Wythe county may yield new
information on Zachariah Wells.)
--On December 14, 1774, William Hash is listed as a
Grantee of 430 acres of land on both sides of Bridle Creek, branch of
the New River.
Page 665--On March 10, 1774, John Kelly is listed as a Grantee of 309
acres of land including Half-Way Spring, on the waters of the New River.
On page 672 a brief of William Herbert's will leaves to his wife Sarah
the plantation where he lived, known as "Poplar Camp" The rest of his
estate goes to his children: Willima, Thomas, Martha, Joanna with the
witnesses being John Jinkins, John Brummet, and William Medding. Will
probated Sept. 3, 1776.
I will try to post more little tidbits unless this stuff proves to be
more of an aggravation than a help to researchers.
