Orrin & members,
In regards to the burial site of Zachariah Wells,.
The issue is whether this contains precise
documentation on WHERE this grave is located. "Family
Cemetery" may or
may
not help if we are unable to find the cemetery. And so far as I have
seen,
no one has.
Orrin, as you know I have relatives where ole Zach used to run around.
Iasked about the "Zachariah Wells Cemetery." I was given directions and did
in fact find a Wells cemetary. However, the only evidence of this being
"THE" Zach Wells Cemetary was a stone for Elizabeth, wife of Zachariah.
Without digging up my files, I believe the stone was 1856. There were
several old stones there that were unreadable. There were several stones
native to the countryside which were used as markers, which tell me those
graves are prior to "markers" being used or available in the area. The
cemetery is in poor condition. It is outside of Big Stone Gap, Virginia in a
section called "Strawberry Patch."
This very well could be the site of Zach's remains but I think not.
Personally, I believe he sold off his land and spent his last days with
Jacob which I think were outside of Lee County, Virginia. My reason being,
in the records of the Three Forks Baptist Church they usually make mention
of deaths of local members. However, Zachariah is mentioned as having passed
on at a meeting but the way it is mentioned is consistant with someone that
was a former member of the church, not how current ones were addressed.
Jacob, if my memory serves me, was given the heave ho from the church.
Jacob ends up in Missouri in 1830. Last transaction by Zach, 1827. Find
Jacob's wherabouts between those dates adn it may yield where Zach is
buried.
