Orin,
As you may remember, my parents live in Appalachia,Virginia now. They are
visiting with me now in Ohio, but I will have them look into this when they
get back home.
There is also a reference to Wallen's Ridge. Wallen's Ridge is up the
mountain overlooking Big Stone Gap to the west. The Powell Valley is to the
East of BSG if I have my directions correct from memory.
Interesting letter.

Subject: [Zachariah Wells] Letter on Mahal Wells
The follwing is the letter that Judy transcribed for the list and
could
not
post as an attachment. If this does not come through as formatted I
will
resend with the formatting off. Notice there is a refernce to a bible
record
owned in 1942 by a Mrs. Vilas Wells in Appalachia, VA. It might be
interesting
to locate this bible and transcribe the contents.

MRS. MALCOLM SMITH APPALACHIA
VIRGINIA
My Dear Mr. Adams,
Your letter in regard to the Wells family received in my work on
Zachariah I was interested only in filling out D.A.R. papers for Louise
Nickels, daughter of W. I. Nickels and Mabel Wells Nickels which I finally
did
after the Registrar General sent others back and said "the only
Zachariah
Wells
she found was one who was shot as a Tory in 1781 or 1780 I do not
remember
now. But after much research I proved to her that the Zachariah was still
living after 1823. So there seems to have been more than one by that
name.
Zachariah Wells received from Virginia two separate land grants. One
by
virtue
of Land Office Treasury Warrant issued Jan. 30, 1816 to Zachariah
Wells
Sr. a
parcel of land in Lee Co., North fork of Powell's River. Another
one in
or
survey bearing date Apr. 2, 1810 in Lee Co. on north side of lane
where he
now
lives, etc.
I never knew where the old Wells farm was, but it was in Wise Co,
then
Lee.
I think that Thomas, the Rev William were his sons too. "His son
Jeremiah was born in 1792 in N. C. and died Nov. 18, 1845 in Lee Co.
married
Elizabeth Culbertson, born 1796 in Scott Co. died Apr. 5, 1857 in
Wise
Co."
The above I copied from Mrs. Martin Wells' Bible. The
Bible
belongs to
Mrs. Vilas Wells here in Appalachia.
From D. A. R. Magazine, 1927, I quote. "Death has stricken no. 1
from
the Pension Rolls. Mrs. Mahala Huff, 108 yrs old, was one of 20
surviving
widows of the War of 1812, and the oldest pensioner of them all. She was
the
Dau. of Moses Wells of Wallen's Ridge, Va. Was the widow of
James Huff
who
served as private in Capt. G. W. Camp's Co. of Va Militia War
1812. He
enlisted at Jonesville Lee Co. Va. Nov. 5 1813, honorably discharged March
10,
1814. Married Mahala Wells (second wife) in Wayne Co. W. Va. Dec 5,
1869.
He
died Feb. 10, 1879.
I am sorry I can not give more, but I was only working on D. A. R.
line,
which finally went through. When I sent the papers in I gave only that Z.
married Miss Osborn, but I believe I will send in the name "Becky" if you
think
that is the name. Where did you find it?
Sincerely
Mrs. Malcolm Smith
I am anxious to read your history.
