Hello,
My family also believed this for several years. One of the things that
makes it so believable is that the reporter stated that this Richard
and wife had moved to the southeast Virginia area and died there.
Since there was a Richard Wells in early Washington County, Virginia
we could not dispute the report.
However, upon examination of the Richard Wells, rev war soldier
of Floyd County, Ky, from his pension file, we find that it was he
that was in Washington County and that he entered the war from there
and he was born 11 Feb 1760 in Philadelphia, Pa and married Susannah
Hutchinson 28 Sept 1797 at Russell County, Va. He moved with his
family to Floyd County, Ky. Many of the Floyd/ Johnson County, Ky
Wells are of this line. This information then discredits the earlier
report of the Richard Wells of Maryland as to being in southeast Va.
Best Regards,
Dot

Margie. This is believed by many of us to be wrong. We don't think
Richard Wells and Ann "Nancy" Brown were the parents of Zachariah even
though it has been published several times. The misinformation originated
at the hands of one M. L. K. Wells when he provided this to Mitchel Hall
for his two publications and later by Kozee who seems to have copied this
without even acknowleding the source.
The reason we think this is that there is really no place for Zachariah in
the family of Richard Wells. It has been reasonably well researched.
But we are about to enter a new phase of the study on this family. 4
descendants of Zachariah are participating in our Wells DNA study as are 4
known and provable descendants of Richard Wells' family. If the DNA from
these two groups does not match, this should settle the issue. If the
Zachariah Wells DNA matches that of another group (we have 22 families
which we believe are all different with the possible exception of two) then
we will know which family Zachariah REALLY connects to and it will be up to
family researchers such as yourself to figure out how.
If the two sets of DNA DO match (clearly a possiblity even if Richard was
not the father of Zachariah) we have an equally daunting challenge to
figure out how and to whom.
We should have this answer in the next 6 weeks.
So stay tuned.
