Gregory, Thank you ever so much for posting your list.I think you are
right on when it comes to the children, dates and all. What wonderful
documentation you have. I have been going over the dates and have come
up with this.
1. Daddy......b. circa 1720-30
There seems to be a difference of opinion as to names and dates of the
other children so I will not get into that.....as I am only interested in
the children's early years and Daddy.
1750...Zachariah #1 born in Virginia
1769...Dispute...any earlier and I think too young to strike out alone.
1770...married Abigail at age 20.
1772-1774 Virginia....scout in Fincastle Milita....Dunmore's War.
1775-1778 no record. Still in military?
1778 found in Wilkes, N. Carolina (relatives here?) Was this land in
payment for military service? If not, where did he get
the money?
1778-1798 bought and sold land in Wilkes Co. N.C.
1779 He is back in Virginia, Lee County.
Is this about what you think?
Question: What counties did Fincastle turn in to?
Andy, maybe this will help you and your Thomas
Zachariah m. Abigail O.
#1. Joseph
#2 Thomas b. 1771 d. abt 1845
2a. Thomas b. 1791
2aa.. Zachariah 1825 deed....age is abt.34.
What do you think?
Thanks again for all your help, all of you. Zach is virgin terrritory
for me.
Happy New Year to you all,
Carolann

Carol & other new members,
With the help of others on the list, I put together a Zachariah
Wells
time-line.
I posted it a couple of weeks ago and since the DNA studay has
brought new
members and new insight, I'll post it again below.
Please note...that the first date on the list that I can confirm is
the
following reference.
1772 Fincastle Virginia on a list of tithables for Botetourt Parish

All the other dates people have passed them on but no documentation
to back
it up.
Since the list does not allow attachments I can't send the timeline
in
Excel, but if you e-mail me directly gkscalf(a)cros.net I will send
you a copy
in excel.
For those new and old to the group, some thoughts i wonder about
regarding
Zachariah:
I wonder how Zachariah accumulated so much land, especially if this
family
is not wealthy. I am working on this at them moment, hoping to find
something on some land deeds that could open up some new clues.
I have read the records of thew Three Forks Babptist Church. They
note of
Zachariah's death, but no date. To make it even more
troublesome...the
church met when the weather and events allowed so you can't "guess"
to a
time frame. However, one of his sons Jacob if I remember correctly )
gets
booted from the church and ends up in Missouri...I suspect this is
where ole
Zach passed as he appears in records there. Perhaps this is an area
to
pursue.
Since Zach went from Fincastle county, Virginia to Wilkes county,
NC, and
then to Lee county, Virginia with the Osbornes and other
families...perhaps
we should research some of these other families since I would
suspect they
came from the same place as well.
Finally, for those not familiar with Virginia research.....don't be
fooled
by the county name game. As people settled further and further to
the west
counties were added. So everything to the west of settled area was
considered one county. The as population grew....that county then
is
"regionalized" and becomes a small county. The land to the west gets
a new
county name and the process starts all over again. Where Zach owned
land is
now Wise county. However, a person could have lived on the Powell
River and
the family never moved over generations, yet would have lived in 8
counties.
So, don't be afraid to look in counties you would not suspect.
Hope this helps.
