Hello Cousins,
I am very sad to hear of the "Wells Cemetary"
Jean has put such great effort into letting us know of the this
property in SE Va.These people put their entire lives into this, and now
its being let go and full of "cow-pies"
I KNOW my Granny Yates would turn over in her grave if she knew
this.Granny is the daughter of Zach. Wells2 and Rebecca Shepard.Granny
is burried in "Dry Creek Cemetary" near the town of
Belgrade,Montana(which she founded)whichright acoss from a little
Baptist Church......many of us in the Yates-Wells-Miller families keep
this old cemetary up.Perhaps we of the Wells desendence could do the
same here.
Speakingfor myself I have a total reverence for such things......if we
let this go we let our past go as well.
Thank you for letting me get this off my chest.....things like this
bother me....
Regards to you and your families.
Andy K

Subject:I went to the Wells Cemetery today.
Hello!
I have been subscribing to the Wells postings for a few weeks now, and since
I was visiting my parents in BSG when the information was offered about the
"Zachariah Wells Cemetery," I decided to visit. I am sorry to say, it was
very disappointing. A family named Horton owns the land. There is a large
barbed wire fence encirling several acres. The cemetery at the top of the
hill inside the smaller new chain link fence is the Horton Family Cemetery.
It has a handful of new stones erected.
The Wells part is outside of the fence on the backside. It is basically
part
of the cow pasture. There are several rocks that were obviously once
markers,
and a few very old limestone markers. One of them is marked "Infant Wells"
with dates in the 1800's. All of the limestone markers were broken. There
are
at least two piles of stones marking graves. The cemetery was not tended,
and
cows had been allowed to walk all around the area. Some of the plain rocks
had W's inscribed on them. One had "J. W." I know that there is a DAR book
out there, "Abtract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots" that has Zachariah
Wells listed as being buried in
Wise County, and that the information was collected in 1955. If he was
buried
on that hill, I doubt anyone will know where.
I took photographs if anyone is interested. I am returning to my home in
North Carolina today, and will develop the film tomorrow. I would like to
ask
Claude to post this letter as I am away from home and am not sure how to
post
it on his site, or even how to find the site right now.
Thanks!

PS -- The "first house on the right" referred to in the directions is a very
large new home that is not yet completed. Perhaps it is replacing an older
home that was bulldozed. "The house on the left" is currently not occupied.
There is a trailer on up on the left -- those are not the owners of the
land.
The Hortons live at the top of the hill in two trailers set far apart."
This doesn't sound to good, does it!

Eddie,
If I'm not mistaken Dave was going to send it to someone on the list with a
website to post for all of us to take advantage of. If I have a chance
later, I'll look back through the list archives re: that message and post it
to the list later.

Today I found volume 2 of this NC Patent Book. I gave someone volume 1
because I thought I wasn't going to need it. I was preparing to give this one
to the same person...out of state. I will get back volume 1 later and get the
Wells, Osborne, Pennington, Shepherd, and Yates information from it. I have
typed it exactly as it was given..i.e. .no mistakes in Osborne spellings.
Jean
Dave,
Since I do not have your email address I'm using the list to ask for the
e-version of the USGS topo may showing the Wells Cemetery near Big Stone Gap.
Thanks!
My apologies for using the list for this request! Jean
Dave and Eddie,
There actually about six or sites on the topt maps for teh area around Big
Stone Gap that are noted as Wells Cemeteries. I was surprised when i saw so
many myself.
Where on this map is the site supposed to be located? Can you tell from the
map?

BAsed on info on the web site for Valley Forge, there are links to
additional info. Most of the Wells' named on the muster rolls for VF
that were from VA were a part of the 12th VA Regiment 4th Brigade, The
Brigade also contained other realtives that link to my family line,
i.e.: Culbertson, Fugate, etc. I found the make up of the Brigade
interesting as it referenced teh Counties in VA these men came from, not
individually but as a group.
Here is the info posted at the VF Brigade page.

If this is correct it probably matches up with the Zachariah Wells who
filed for pension in KY.
Just some food for thought. Again I found teh county make up for teh 4th
Brigade intersting.

I contacted the lady who hosts the Queen Anne's County web site on the
MDGenWeb. She sent me this info on St. Luke's. I just thought others may be
interested.
"Claude,
Hamer is probally correct. That is an old family here. Church Hill is
between Centreville and Chestertown on Rt. 213 on your map. St. Luke's is on
the "main street - the only street" and is a beautiful old church. I'm not
sure how far the graves go back, but parts of the church are original if not
all. I think they still have the books at the church and they are also on
file at the archives. Good luck with old' Zach, let me know if you need help.

Dear list members,
I apologize profusely for "wasting" everyone's time with my previous post.
I am new to the List Serve community and was unaware of the protocol re:
this type of post. I assumed I was being helpful; I have been painfully
reminded what "assuming" does to one who does it!
Very respectfully,
A computer-challenged, computer-illiterate, and apparently paranoid but
well-meaning cousin,
Cathleen
P.S. Please no more replies; I have been dully chastised and feel like a
total idiot.

Dear Wells Cousins,
As a follow up to my question about the Wells Cemetery near Big Stone Gap, I
now have an e-version of the USGS topo map that shows the cemetery location
at fairly high resolution. I will be happy to send it to anyone on the list
who is interested. Because I do not think that we can actually post anything
like this on the rootsweb website, I ask that you just send me a request at
my e-mail address, and I will mail it to you. Be warned, however, that this
BMP file is a bit over 1.8 Megabytes, so it may take awhile to download!
