Breany,
I once saw Zach Jr.'s wife's last name spelled SHEPARD. I do not remember
the source where I saw it. I think it was Gendex.com (genealogy site).
Have you traced this spelling?

Is the Rebecca Shepherd that married Zachariah Wells, Jr. an aunt or
distant cousin of the Rebecca Shepherd that married William Thomas Wells,
son of Thomas Wells? Who was the father of Zach, Jr.'s wife? William
Thomas Wells' wife was the daughter of Elvira Lewis and William Shepherd.
She was born in 1798 and died in 1865. I don't think the Rebeccas are the
same but who were the parents of the Rebecca Shepherd that married Zach, Jr.
Was it James Shepherd?

The following is the type of items I have been posting on the web at all
of the Genealogy forums and chat rooms, etc. If you can think of things
to add I would appreciate any input. I am pushing to have Zachariah
resolved before I retire, abt. 2015 or so, unless Social Security dies
and I have to work for the rest of my life. I don't want to pass on and
have to chase old Zack down in person to get the answers.
Thsi is posted at GenForum and similar info is posted on Genconnect:
Greetings! To all! I and about a zillion other descendants of Zachariah
Wells, of Wise County, who settled in the Powell's Valley area are on a
quest. Hopefully one
day a knight on that mythical white charger will come along with some
evidence that can finally put this man in his proper place and time for
us.
We are searching for some evidence to show:
1.) Who his lovely bride was. We have all seen and recorded that her
name was either Abigail or Elizabeth Osborne, the last name has never
changed. It is the first
name that causes the problem. We have heard of a death certificate of
one of his daughters that shows her mother as Abigail, but I have not
seen it and all of us
would love to see a copy. (I have seen a copy now and it does say
Abigail)
2.) Once we are sure who she is then it may be easier to identify her
family. Again, we all have seen numerous choices. From james to Jonathan
to Caleb to
Ephraim Osborne and their associated spouses. Based on the ages of Zack
and wife there is only one match that has dates that make sense, Caleb
and Hannah.
Again proof would be greatly appreciated.
3.) The next paradox is Zachariah's birth date and place of origin. We
all have seen the established and well recorded connections to Richard
Wells and Nancy
Brown. But, there has never been anyone who can find any records that
show them having a son named Zachariah. We have seen many published
lists of Richrads
children, but none of them mention our good old friend Zachariah. We
believe somewhere along the way this connection was made in error and it
has grown
through time and publishing as fact. (It may well be true, but again
where is the beef!)
4.) Where is ol' Zack from is another problem that we are trying to
resolve. If we can track him through the sands of time to his place of
origin, we may also be able
to identify his parents and further heritage. It has been suggested he
originated in MD, VA and NC.
5.) A newer question is: Is this Zachariah related to the Zachariah
Wells that was hung by Benjamin Cleveland in NC abt. 1782 for being a
Tory? It has been
suggested that he is the son of this noted individual. (There has been
some speculation, by several of us, he was one in the same individual.
That Cleveland spared him at the last minute, but based on the
reputation I have seen written of Cleveland "I don't think so!") The son
theory may hold more water. If this is the case we need to identify the
Tory, his family; i.e.: his wife, where he was from, his children, etc.
We may have a whole new level of family heritage to track. (That's just
great, like we didn't have enough problems with the one Zachariah we had
already!!)
Of the questions on Zachariah Wells, these are the main ones that need
to be resolved. I have been trying to contact the allied families, i.e.:
the Osborne's, the
Howard's, the Sturgill's, the Robinette's, etc. to see if any of them
may have some where in there records and files info that may of been
overlooked because it
didn't deal directly with their families. Thinking (and praying) if
there was a family bible, it may of been passed down throgh one of the
allied family branches, instead
of the Wells branches. But to date no luck on this mission. I am an
optimist, I am hopeing that somewhere out there a descendant will come
along and have at least
some of the info we are seeking that will open up the doors to the rest
of the info. Someday a new researcher will come along that has some of
the proof that we
need to resolve these riddles of this individual. Then we all can
concentrate on more mundane things, like navel lint or something, and
move on to solving the mystery of the universe, as well as finding more
details of the rest of the families we are researching.
I have family reports located on my users pages located at the Family
Tree Maker web site. URL
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/e/l/Claude-E-Wells/
I have a report for Zachariah Wells, based on the currently accepted
data, with notes advising there are questions about the items in
question. It is listed under Family Rpeort for James Wells. I also have
other reports and info located there for my other primary branches of
the family, both maternal and paternal sides.
So, Please, if you know of anything or have anything to clear up these
questions, let me know and I will tell the world of Zachariah Wells
descendants that we may
finally be seeing teh light at the end of the tunnel, and it ain't the
train.
Hi folks,
This is an amazing website for the New River area that a Zion/Blubaugh
researcher directed me to. http://www.ls.net/~newriver
This is a big web page. Included is an account of the hanging of the Tory
Zacharia Wells. Use your "edit", "find" with the string of "Wells" to get
to his story.

Best Regards,

I have tried several times to submit this but I think I keep forgetting
to set as plain text. I will try it again.
Don't recall if I ever printed my family line for quick reference for
everyone so I thought I would list it here. I have a family report on my
users page at the Family Tree Maker web site under my name Claude E.
Wells, the url is:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/e/l/Claude-E-Wells/
Here is a synopsis of my family line from Ol' Zack:
Zachariah Wells m. Abigail Osborne (we are getting closer that this is
correct)
Jeremiah Wells m. Elizabeth Culbertson
James Franklin Wells m. Jennettie Compton (or any variation of
spelling her first name)
Winfield Scott Wells m. Sarah Margaret Fugate
Emerson Galington Wells m. Sarah Catherine Robinette
Guy Galington Wells m. Margaret Elizabeth McMillan
(my Mom's family paternal family settled in Wilkes County NC in 1788
they poss. knew the Wells', it is a small world after all) My parents
met PA and married in MD.
Claude Emerson Wells m. Cynthia Jean Halse
Most of my research info came from a dear sweet cousin who got me into
this mess, I mean search for family. I believe she relied on bible info
some records she found and family recollections. I picked up the trail
for her and thought my Wells stuff was pretty much complete, until I met
you guys and Orin, Just Kidding, it has been fun and I have been able to
correct some original info she had and have join the quest. Orin and
several others on the slit have exchanged emails over the past couple of
years with ideas and theories, I have been chasing after Osbornes and
and allied families hoping that maybe somewhere there was someone with
the silver bullet, wait that's for werewolves, I mean the magic key to
unlock the door. No luck so far, but as a Sagittarian whose one trait is
to tilt windmills, I will keep slaying dragons to try and find the
answer. I am glad there is some new people involved, hoping that the
more the merrier and possibly somewhere there may be that one
descendant, hopefully they aren't setting out there all comfortable with
their tree done with their documents not realizing there are others who
need their help, who has hidden in their possession that key we all have
been looking for. (I can dream can't I!) I hope that the more that are
involved the clearer we can get the picture.
Already some have come on board with info that others had missed, some
of it is good background data that supports our info we already had. I
hope with the additional eyes, fingers, feet and effort we can get this
Ol' Zack problem settled.
Enough of my ramblings, good luck and glad to see everyone is still
searching.

Fellow researchers,
If I might ask for everyone's descendancy and address if that is ok. I am
compiling a folder, then family group sheets. I have corresponded with people in
the past and went back to email them and the address is no longer good. If you
don't want to that is fine, but it is just to keep in touch with family
descendancy.

I have looked for one, but there are none in Lee county. I am guessing he
did leave a will, but where? Probably the same county that he died in, but
again where?
Greg
The following is just for your interest if you haven't read it, and I hope
I'm not breaking a copywrite law here, but the author was my old high
school principal, so were he still living, I think he would forgive me . .
.
>From The Story of Wise County (Virginia) by Luther F. Addington (copywrite
1956):
..."Those Powell Valley settlers, some of them at least, were people who
had attempted to follow Boone into Kentucky; but, finding the journey long
and difficult, they stopped and built their log cabins in Powell Valley.
For example, by this route came Richard Wells from the lowlands of North
Carolina, about the year 1792. Bringing with him a large family, he settled
in upper Powell Valley in the present limits of Wise county. William Wells,
who was probably one of the sons of Richard Wells, was one of the first men
to purchase land in the Wild Cat Valley. . . . Zachariah Wells, another one
of the sons of Richard, purchasd a tract of land at the mouth of Looney's
Creek in the year 1805. The lower part of the town of Appalachia is now
built on this land. In the year 1819, Zachariah Wells sold to Robert Wells
100 acres of land "near the three forks of Powell river" (deed books, nos
1,2,3,and 5 Court Records of Lee Co, Va #3,461) and one line of the
boundary of this tract touched the land of Thomas Wells. Jeremiah Wells,
another member of this large family of brothers, was the grandfather of the
late Judge Tazewell J. Wells, whose father was James Franklin Wells."
The account was taken from Hugh L. Sulfridge's thesis for Columbia
University. Sulfridge was a former principal of Big Stone Gap school. His
sources are not cited.
Hello Gang!
Going through some old sources I ran across a copy of the 1870 Censu, Wise
County, VA, page 331. In it is the family of John P. Wells, the son of
Zachariah Wells Jr., and living with them at that time is a Zachariah Wells
age 90. So we know that Zachariah Jr. died after 1870 and possibly in Wise
county.
Eddie
Don,
I have William T. Wells b.1779 married to Susannah (Susan) Ward, and
Zachariah Wells Jr. married to Rebecca (Becky) Shepard.
The Abigail/Elizabeth Osborne person is married to Zachariah Wells Sr. I
think that possibly these are the same person and Abigail's middle name
might have been Elizabeth.
