Not necessarily. The census information is probably the least reliable.
If her husband supplied the information, anything is possible <bwg> It
might also depend on the date of the census and date of death.
>Wells, Noah 15 b. in VA = born abt 1835
>& Wells, Levi 31 b. in VA = born abt 1819
New to me, but sure sound like possible nephews or children of a nephew. I
hadn't even looked for Jemima assuming it would not be in my database
because I would not have expected to find Wells in the household. Nice
going. Now I see it in mine and it agrees. Census date was 01 Aug 1850.
Shows John, Jemima and Levi could not read or write. Guess they didn't
spend much time on schooling in Lee county.
This census was for district 1 in Harlan County. Not exactly nearby, but
possibly an explanation of the above are the following two in the same
district.
Page 10, Dwelling 7, family 7 24 Jul 1850
Thomas Wells 50 b: VA Blacksmith
Mahala Wells 44 b: NC
Elizabeth Wells 11 b: VA
Martha Wells 08 b: VA
Peggy Wells 05 b: VA
Jemima Wells 02 b: VA
Could this be Jemima's brother Thomas?
Three doors down at dwelling 10, family 10:
Hiram Wells 25 b: VA farmer
Elizabeth Wells 24 b: VA
Charles J. Wells 03 b: VA
Mary J. Wells 5/12 b: KY
This would probably be a son of Thomas. Levi looks a bit too old to be a
son of Thomas, but most certainly not a son of Mahala - but you never know
with those mountain mommas.
This also shows that it is most likely that Thomas moved to Harlan county
between 1848 when Jemima was born and 1849 since Mary J. was born in
Kentucky and assuming they were there a few months. Might be interesting
to correlate property transactions showing Thomas in Lee county in 1846-49
and Harlan county in the same period.
Interestingly, it looks like Thomas and Mahala could read and write, but
Hiram couldn't.

Thanks Orin for all the typing on the 1850 census of Lee Co.
I also searched thur the list archives & found a listing
of 1850 census info on John & Jemima in Harlan Co. Ky
I had missed the post back in May from Greg & Kathy Hines.
Just in case anyone else missed it :
Dwelling #141 Harlan Co KY Fed Census
John Sturgill 71 b in Va = so he would be born abt 1779.
Jemima " 68 b. in NC = so born abt 1782 vs the death cert =1781
Wells, Noah 15 b. in VA = born abt 1835
& Wells, Levi 31 b. in VA = born abt 1819
Did anyone have any clues on who this Noah or Levi were??
Thanks for sharing.

For the Ira Wells listed below William Thomas Wells' household or his
father's household, I believe Copey's actually Cassie because Cassie Joseph
was his wife's name. I believe this is the same Ira because their son Elihu
or Elikn in this census :) (I wished they would have wrote a little neater
in those census records) was born in 1845, Elizabeth was also born 1846, and
Andrew or Anderson was born in 1849.
Thanks for the information, Orin.

As promised, here is the 1850 census for Lee County. Now, if some of you

you want a more orderly rendition, I have also placed it on the Wells

I wonder if her death was recorded in a local newspaper? It is quite
possible that Elizabeth Wells, wife of some Zachariah died 03 Apr 1858 and
that Elizabeth Wells, wife of Jeremiah Wells, died 05 Apr 1859. It is just
as possible that Elizabeth Wells, wife of some Zachariah Wells, was not
recorded in the 1850 census. It is also possible that someone learned
about the Elizabeth Wells d: 03 Apr 1858 and assumed it was the Elizabeth
Wells, wife of Jeremiah and somewhere along the way confused the date.
I will contact Opal Graber, from whom I got the information on Elizabeth
Wells, wife of Jeremiah and find out what her source was for the death date
and see if she has any information on the burial location. I will report back.

There is no question as to what the stone reads. I read it in 1997 it is
very clear. It just doesn't match what some other written records have for
Elizabeth Wells, wife of Zachariah.

Hello Orin,
do you have access to the Carter Co 1850 census??
if so I would love to find out what it listed for
Solomon Sturgill family & for Jemima Wells Sturgill?
have also seen the name spelled Stirgel, Stirgill, Stirgil,
earlier Stodgill,Stergill & probally many other ways I haven't tried.
Found Francis Sturgill & David Sturgill on the 1843 Tax list
living near the water course of Cumberland River of Letcher Co KY
several Caudills listed on the tax list too.
Also found lots of Wells listed on cemetery records on the
usgenweb Carter County web site- most are 1900+ dates
says to really double check dates for accuracy as it was taken
from other records*
but did notice one interesting one?
Wells, Zack h/ MARTHA NO DATES = buried in the Edison cemetery.
Wells, MARTHA NO DATEAS= Edison Cemetery
didn't notice any other Wells in the Edison Cemetery,
but there is also a Wells cemetery listed!!!***
Okay who was this MARTHA??
THANKS for all the help, I TREASURE IT!

In the 1850 census for Lee County, VA I find the following (may have posted
previously). Maybe someone with more in depth knowledge of the family can
positively identify her from the children present.
Page 326, Dwelling 338, 10 Aug 1850
Elizabeth Wells 58 b: VA
A. Jackson Wells 22 b: VA (This would have been Andrew Jackson Wells)
Agnes Wells 18 b: VA
Elizabeth Wells 16 b: VA
Jonathan Wells 14 b: VA
Sarah Wells 08 b: VA
Finetta Wells 06 b: VA
I think this is the Elizabeth Wells who was married to Jeremiah Wells, son
of Zachariah and Abigail. Jeremiah died prior to 20 Mar 1848 when
Elizabeth was appointed administrator of his estate. She died 05 Apr 1859
age 62 widow, b: NC and daughter of Joseph and Agnes Culbertson.
Problems: This Elizabeth was born in VA according to the census, not NC.
The stone in the cemetery that Greg found is dated 03 Apr 1858, NOT 05 Apr
1859 and shows her as the wife of Zachariah not Jeremiah. Something is
wrong with this information!!! Either the stone is wrong or the source of
my information was wrong. Or, there were TWO Elizabeth Wells who died
about the same time.
But, this is the ONLY Elizabeth Wells in the 1850 census in Lee county.
Later this weekend I will post ALL the 1850 census for Lee County and we
can mutually try to pin down who belongs where.

Hi Greg,
THANKS for sharing this news with us newer list members.
Have you checked the 1850 census to see who Elizabeth was living
with at that time? & maybe it gave her age? or where she was born??
ALSO where is this cemetery located ?
I'd also be interested in finding Solomon Sturgell in the 1850
census. ( son of Jemima & John Sturgell)
& Jemima who died in 1856 so she should a lso be listed in the 1850
census maybe in Carter Co Ky.
Just going back over some of my notes & realized I didn't have
any of the census info on them.
Thanks for sharing your discovery of the tombstone of Elizabeth
with us on the list. I love learning more about this all these
different branches off Zach.
HAve a great day.

For some reason this did not post to the list. I will give it a direct

I have to believe that someone over the years would have recorded the
stones in this cemetery. Has anyone checked with local historical
societies or county genealogical societies to see if there are recordings
of this and other cemeteries in the county?

Hi Claude & Orin,
Just have to ask where a copy of the will of Jemima Sturgill can be
found??? will book # ?? & page ??
Do you have a county courthouse address where I can write off to
to get myself a copy?
ALSO has anyone ever found a will on old Zachariah?
Thanks,

still diggin away sloowly
To all,
I have seen a gravestone for Elizabeth. I'll have to dig in my records but
I remember the stone.
Elizabeth Wells, at the top
wife of Zachariah in the middle.
I'll have to look up the file for the years on it.

osborn, ephriam's son in the house of wells ward in 1796. they were
probably cousins.
This shows that the Jonathan Osborne who married Agness Wells was not the
son of James Osborne, but Ephriam Osborne. I would suggest that this
strengthens the probability that Abigail Osborne, daughter of James
Osborne, was the more likely candidate to have married Zachariah Wells. In
this case Jonathan was marrying the daughter of his first cousin, not his
niece.
>>no one knows the name of zachariah's wife. Eliz. has been suggested from
some statement made by a wells decendant. abigail osborn daughter of james
of lee county, va., son of caleb, brother to ephriam, married zach,jr,<<
Again, the ONLY way this could be possible is if the Zachariah Wells, Jr.
he is referencing here is actually the one we all know as Zachariah Wells,
Sr. Could it be that Agness Wells was a sister to Zachariah Wells, Sr (as
we know him) and thus more of a contemporary to Jonathan Osborne and it was
Jonathan's cousin who married Zachariah, Sr.?
>> the zachariah name entered the osborn family through zach, sr. capt.
enoch osborn, ephriams son named a son zachariah. zach. osborn died ca, 1877.<<
This is confusing.
There are no answers here, but it surely generates more questions. Can you
get back to Charles Osborne and try to obtain his sources for this
information? In particular we need to see the family structure for Caleb,
James and Ephraim Osborne showing all the children and who each married.
We can hope he has documentary evidence to back it up.
Ask him if he is suggesting that the Zachariah Wells who married Abigail
Osborne was a daughter of James Osborne and that the Agess Wells who
married Jonathan Osborne, son of Ephraim, was a sister of this Zachariah?
Finally, is he suggesting that the father of Zachariah Wells (who married
Abigail Osborne) and Agness Wells was also named Zachariah Wells? If so
what does he know about THIS Zachariah?

>THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME ELIZABETH CAN BETRACED BACK TO 1974 WELLS FAMILY
RESEARCH BULLETIN. BUT THAT WAS IN REFERENCE TO THE WIFE OF ZACH,JR.
This is true and possibly some researchers have mixed up Zachariah Jr. &
Sr. as a result of this article and the references it makes. The reference
is to page 314 which goes as follows:
"Fred Longhurst wrote concerning his Wells ancestress.
Peggy Wells married John Creech in Wilkes County, N.C. Cir 1789. His
father Stephen Creech moved there from Montgomery Co, VA in 1788. Their
first child was born 1790. They moved from Wilkes Co. to Lee Co., VA in
1799 with Stephen Creech. John and Peggy came to Poor Fork in Harlan Co.,
KY in 1809 where they remained until their death. A gentleman that I
corresponded with sometime ago from Michigan told me that Peggy was a
daughter of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Osborne) Wells and the Elizabeth was
the daughter of Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Howard) Osborne. He did not state
the source of his information but it is a family genealogist interested in
the Osborne Family. He has not responded to my later letters."
A little later a book "Of Bolder Men" by Mary Brewer page 214-215 is cited
as carrying the erroneous information from "History of Johnson County" by
Mitchell Hall and states further:
"A son, Zachariah Wells, was born Cir 1739 and died at Big Stone Gap,
Virginia in 1825. he married Elizabeth Osborne. In 1819 he sold 100 acres
to a brother Robert. This land joined that of another brother Thomas.
Zachariah Wells Jr. , Born 1780, wife Rebecca, was son of the elder
Zachariah. His son, Elder William T. Wells, was born around 1799 and was
deceased before 1878 when his estate was settled. He married Rebecca
Shepherd, born 1798 died 01 Nov 1865 at age 67 (Wise County Death
Register). She was the daughter of William and Lavinia Shepherd."
Given the fact this writer took Mitchell Hall's bad work without question I
don't think we can put much reliance on the rest of the information. We
know, for example, that it is most likely that it was Zachariah Sr. who
sold his son Robert the land mentioned above and that Thomas was another
son. This person has clearly mixed up individuals. The 1850 census shows
William T. Wells was born Cir 1797 in North Carolina.
>>ELIZABETH OSBORN, PERHAPS THE DAU-IN LAW OR DAU OF CALEB OSBORN WAS
LISTED ON THE LIST OF BAPTISMALS OF DUTCHMAN CREEK CHURCH IN 1774. JEMIMA
WELLS ,OLDEST DAU OF ZACH WELLS,JR. AND ABIGAIL OSBORN WAS BORN IN NC IN
1781. THAT WOULD MAKE ZACH,JR, B. CA 1761 TOO OLD TO BE THE SON OF ELIZABETH.
First, Jemima Wells was a daughter of Zachariah Wells, Sr., NOT Zachariah
Wells, Jr. But, I have yet to see any documentary evidence that links an
Elizabeth Osborne to Zachariah Wells, Sr. It is possible he is suggesting
that the father of Zachariah Wells, Sr. as we know him (who married Abigail
Osborne) was also named Zachariah. At the moment my brain is mush and I
can not find who it was that Zachariah Wells, Jr. married. Was it supposed
to have been Rebecca Shepherd and if so wasn't William T. Wells also
supposed to have married a Rebecca Shepherd? Are these some how crossed or
were there actually two Rebecca Shepherds here? If this is correct, then
Zachariah Wells, Jr. didn't marry an Elizabeth Osborne, did he? Or, did
he? We are pretty well convinced that Zachariah Wells, Sr. married Abigail
Osborne due to the will of his daughter Jemima Sturgill. So, then, who was
the Elizabeth, wife of Zachariah Wells, who died in 1858? Seems too late
to have been a wife of Zachariah Wells, Sr. UNLESS Abigail died and he
married a younger woman. We see deeds carrying the names of Zachariah
Wells and his wife Elizabeth. Does anyone know for certain which Zachariah
Wells this was?
Help me out here someone.
>ZACH, SR, WAS BORN IN 1740S' OR BEFORE.I DON'T SEE MY JONATHAN OSBORN
>MARRYING HIS NIECE, IF AGNESS WELLS WAS A DAU OF A SISTER TO JONATHAN.
>HOPE THIS HELPS.
Confusing, but I think this person is suggesting that Elizabeth Osborne was
a sister to Jonathan Osborne and that one of the daughters of Zachariah
Wells was named Agness Wells whom he is suggesting was married to Jonathan
Osborne.
Indeed, The SWVirginian September 24, 1796 Jonathon Osborn married Agnes
Wells Grayson County. (submitted by Greg Scalf)
He is simply saying he does not expect that it was Elizabeth who married
Zachariah. I think we have seen this Agness Wells turn up previously.
But, I don't recall the context. I think someone was trying to identify her.
The will of James Osborne contributed by Judy Stephenson shows that he
named daughters Elizabeth and Abigail but contrary to what some have
suggested, he did not give either their maiden or married names (assuming
this is a full transcript). It also names a son Jonathan. This could well
be the Jonathan who married Agness Wells and Abigail could well have been
his brother. James Osborne's will was proven in January 1822 so he
probably died at the end of 1821. This would imply that Abigail Osborne
Wells was still living at that time, if it is his daughter who married
Zachariah Wells, Sr.

Muddled indeed. Hope my bits help.
