Dear John:
The source of "Miss Hash" as the wife of Enoch Osborne is page 171,
"Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, Virginia" by Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls,
republished by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1982. Sorry, but I
forgot to copy the original publication dtae, but it was years earlier.
Don't forget that one of the surveys for the Loyal Land Company on
the New River prior to 1783 included a survey for William Hash and Zachariah
Wells.
I had not seen the deed signed by Enoch Osborn and Zachariah Wells.
Interesting!
I am also intrigued by the Tory Zachariah. There is a possibility
that he was a separate man whose family moved on to Georgia. I posted that
information a week or so ago. The other theory is that our Zachariah was
indeed the tory, but was not hung after all. I have absolutely no proof of
this at all, but it sure is an unusual coincidence that the tory Zachariah
was hung in Wilkes County, but there are absolutely no records of him ever
living in Wilkes County, that is, unless he is our Zachariah. Also interesting.
In addition, don't forget James Ward who appeared in Herbert's tax
list for 1772 and served with Zachariah Wells in the Fincastle Militia in
1774. James also moved to Wilkes County. Recall that the wife of William
Wells, son of Zachariah, was a Ward.

Meant to add my thoughts that I am wondering if Enoch Osborn (or perhaps
one of his brothers) is Zack's father in law. All of those Osborn's
certainly make more sense than James Osborn.

Hi everybody!
A quick report on what I found today at the library. I think we can
safely say that the Zachariah Wells found in Wilkes Co, NC from around 1778
to about 1799 was the same Zachariah found in Fincastle Co, VA 1772 to
around 1774.
The reason I conclude that is based mostly on following up what John Wells
has previously mentioned -- watch the names. These old boys stayed
together and moved on together. The Tithable List for Botetourt Parish,
Fincastle Co., VA for 1772-1773 (Vol 25 #1 of the Magazine of Virginia
Genealogy, published by the Virginia Gen. Soc.) shows Zachariah Wells
(Harbert to pay) and Ezekial Young (Harbert to pay). It has been mentioned
before that these two were employees of Harbert's. Furthermore on this
list we find Enoch, Ephraim, Stephen, Jonathan and Robert Osborn, John and
William Hash, and Wiliam Landreth.
In "Montgomery County, The First 10 Years" by Judge C.W. Crush, 1982 I
found a roster of Capt Enoch Osborn's company 5 Dec 1777. Notable names
include Ezekial Young, William Landreth, Jonathon Hash, Francis Stogil
(Sturgil?) Stephen, Jonathon, Ephraim, Ephraim Jr and Stephen Osborn Sr.
and Joshua Pennington. Daniel Blevins is in another unit. On a roster of
the Montgomery County Militia, Capt Enoch Osborn's company April 1781
included Thomas & William Hash, Robert & Timothy Pennington, William
Landreth, and Robert, John, & Jeremiah Osborn.
As mentioned before, Enoch Osborn's wife's maiden name was Hash. John, do
you have a source on this? We see Enoch signing a deed as a witness with
Zack in Wilkes Co in 1790. We also see a number of Penningtons, and
William Landreth married Zack's daughter Abigail. I copied a bunch of
Wilkes Co tax lists today as well for 1787 to 1799. I need to look them
over still, but it should come as no surprise that these Osborn boys are
living near Zack, Solomon and Enoch not appearing until 1789.
I am curious as to why we don't see Zack serving with everybody else.
Where was he from 1774 to 1778? Could it have something to do with the
Tory Zack who was hanged in Wilkes Co? Well let me get back at it. As
always, if I have anything you want a copy of let me know. In theory, I
can scan it and send it.

Does anybody know who Rebecca's parents are?
Don
Don:
I suspect that there is a connection with Daniel Blevins who
appeared in William Herbert's district in the 1773 Fincastle County, VA 1773
tax list along with Zachariah Wells. Daniel Blevins, or a relative by the
same name, followed Zachariah and many others from Fincastle into North
Carolina. For example, Jonathan Osborne, brother of Enoch, both of whom
appear in the 1773 Fincastle Co. tax list for Herbert's district, applied
for his Rev. pension in either Ashe or Wilkes Co., NC(I forgot which one).
Does Daniel Blevins ring a bell?

I'm pretty certain that the Zachariah Wells of Fincastle County, VA, is the
same Zachariah who received property in Wilkes County in 1787 and sold the
same in 1797 just prior to moving to Lee County, VA. Everything seems to fit
that scenerio. First, note that Zachariah Wells was listed in the 1773
Fincastle Co., VA tax list of William Herbert. His tax was paid by Herbert
along with the tax for Ezekial Young. Young was an employee of Herbert and
logically so was Zachariah. Herbert's district was located at Poplar Camp in
what is now Wythe County, VA, near the Carroll and Grayson County borders on
the New River. Also in the same small district were Enoch Osborne, George
Pennington(Pemberton), Daniel Blevins, William Hash, Wells Ward, James Ward,
Ephraim Osborne, Jonathan Osborne, Robert Osborne, and Stephen Osborne. The
records of the Loyal Land Company list a survey for land prior to 1783 "on
the New River" for Zachariah Wells and William Hash. The connection gets
better in that the wife of Enoch Osborne was "A Miss Hash" ... a very rare
name in the area! Note that James Ward, William Hash, Penningtons, Blevins,
and several of the Osbornes also show up in Wilkes County records. It was a
natural path along the New River.
I think we're off base trying to attach Abigail Osborne to the two
James Osbornes of Russell and Scott counties. They just were not in or near
the residence of Zachariah Wells when he supposedly married Abigail Osborne.
However, Enoch, Jonathan, Ephraim et al. were there!
Just food for thought.

Thanks for the correction. Obviously, the copy I have has been altered.
The Tory Zachariah Wells is still a puzzle, but I do have a possible
identity thanks to Orin Wells. There is a Wells family in Effingham County,
Georgia, that sure sounds interesting:
The father was Zachariah Wells "of North Carolina," born c.1745 and died
c.1781. His children were as follows:
Isaac b.c.1765-70
Zachariah b.c.1770-73
Jacob b.c.1770-83
Henry b.1774
James b. aft. 1774
William b.c.1776-80
According to Orin, this research was contributed by a Dr. Franklin.
According to Dr. Franklin, this Wells family came to Georgia during the
Revolutionary War from North Carolina. Interesting!! Could the father of
this family be Zachariah the Tory???

Hi John,
You point out many of the reasons why I have been so skeptical that James
was Abigail's father. For the record though, James Osborn does not
identify any of his children in this will by their surname (unitl naming
his executors), but does name Reuel Osborn in this manner. This is another
reason I believe Reuel was a grandson or nephew.
I don't believe anyone is certain that this James Osborn is the same James
Osborn who was Caleb's son. In fact, I have run across two James Osborns
living in Russell Co, VA around the turn of the century. Caleb's son is
mentioned as being from Washington Co, NC in Rowan Co, NC deed book 9 page
184 (9 Sept 1782). I am not aware of a Washington Co. NC, perhaps it
should read Washington Co, VA??
James was probably living in Rowan Co near his father in the 1770s.
(Wilkes was formed from Rowan Co.). I am not certain which Zachariah was
living in Fincastle Co., VA in the 1770s. We do find a Zachariah in Wilkes
in 1778. He may have been there for quite some time before that as a
Zachariah Wells was hanged in Wilkes Co in 1781 I believe. Could they be
related? I need to go through my files to refresh my memory on Tory Zack.
It seems that the Zack who was hanged was in his forties or early fifties
and that his family moved off. I'm just not sure. Good to hear from you.

Greetings! I have seen a listing for Zachariaah Wells buying land in Wilkes
county in 1787! I can't find the file presently! I think iy was something
about the New River settlers.

A question for you. Why was Abigail identified as an Osborne in James' will
and not as Abigail Wells. In addition, are we sure that the James of North
Carolina is the James of Virginia? Thirdly, James does not show up in the
same vicinity as Zachariah Wells in 1773-4 in what is now Wythe and Grayson
counties. How could he meet and marry Abigail, James' daughter, when James
was living very, very far away. Just curious.

Hi everybody!
It's great to be back. I was pleasantly surprised to have so many e-mails
in my in box and I too will get to work on some of these loose ends
involving Zachariah. I know we will find the answers.
As for the connection between Abigail and James Osborne, I too have been
very skeptical that she was his daughter, but let me open the door a crack
to those who believe she was his daughter:
James was born no later than 1745 because he witnesses a deed transaction
in Wilkes Co., NC for his father on 16 June 1766. To be Abigail's father
he would have had to be born c.1730 or prior. Therefore, he would be at
least 90 on the date of his death in 1822.
Did James have a minor son (Reuel) when he wrote the will in 1816? If so,
then this guy can't hardly be Abigail's father. But notice in the will
that the person drafting the will specifically identifies a person as a son
or daughter throughout, but when it comes to Reuel, no affiliation is
mentioned. Could it be that Reuel was a nephew or grandson? Perhaps an
affiliation is mentioned in a later deed in Russell Co when Reuel disposes
of this land. Well, just food for thought.

> I have all sorts of problems with the theory that Abigail Osborn
Wells was the daughter of James Osborn of Russell County. Some years ago
some researchers followed the children of James mentioned in the will and it
seems that James was too young to have been Abigail's father. Remember that
Abigail's father would have had to have been born c.1730 or before. This
would have made the James of Russell County over 90 years old when he died
with children under 20. Pretty tough to fit!
> Now to go about this through the back door. As you know, Zachariah
Wells has been identified as living in William Herbert's district of
Fincastle Co., VA in 1773 and 1774. Herbert lived at Poplar Camp in what is
now Wythe Co., VA, on the New River where it crosses into what is now
Grayson County, VA. Also in Herbert's District in the 1771, 1772, and 1773
tax lists were Enoch Osborn, Ephraim Osborn, Jonathan Osborn, and Stephen
Osborn, and William Hash, James Ward, Wells Ward, etc. The Loyal Land Co.
surveyed land for Zachariah Wells AND William Hash on an unknown date prior
to 1783 on the New River. Most of these men also served in the Fincastle
Co., VA Militia together in 1774. The book, Pioneer Settlers of Grayson
County, VA, by Benjamin Nuckolls, Bristol, TN, 1914, page 171, states that
Enoch Osborn and his brothers Ephraim, Solomon, and Jonathan Osborn were
some of the first settlers of the New River area along the Wythe Co.-Grayson
Co. border. The maiden name of Enoch Osborn's wife was "Hash."
>None of the records of Fincastle Co. area for the 1770's mention an Osborn
by the name of James. Since Zachariah Wells was definitely living in the
Poplar Camp area in 1773-4 when he was supposed to have married Abigail
Osborn, I suspect strongly that Abigail is the daughter of one of the Osborn
brothers of what is now Grayson County. I can find no connection of any kind
with the James Osborn of Russell County.

I have some records on the Osbornes in which I copied from a library in
Wise County, Virginia. In it, the will of James Osborne states the children
are to receive money. They are are Jonathon, David, Lucrece, Elizabeth,
Lucy, Abigail, Huldah, and Polly. Son Solomon received the plantation and 8

James is the son of Caleb and Hannah Osborne. There is info on Caleb, not

However, James built is house in Castlewood, Virginia. I am not sure if
Castlewood was in Fincastle County at one time. It could have been, but I
have not researched to see if it was.

family tree (click on the line below my granddaughter's picture to view

I'm also trying to check out the Osborne connection. The wife of Zachariah
Wells was Abigail Osborne who was the daughter of either Ephraim, Enoch, or
James Osborne of Fincastle County, VA. Does this ring a bell?

grandfather George Wells, reported to be a son of Absolum Wells who
immigrated from England to south Georgia (but now we see another whole
