Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I also checked Rowan County records a few years ago, but found nothing that
indicated any connection there with Zachariah Wells. Did I miss something?

Zachariah Wells who married an Osborne is listed in the latest DAR Patriot
Index as being a private in NC.
Micajah Pennington (Sr.) who married Rachel Jones was called a Captain, but
was listed as a Private in VA in the DAR index. BTW, does anybody have the
parents for this Rachel Jones? I descend from the Penningtons too.

It would be terrific if you could dig into Loudoun County a little deeper. I
have a gut feeling that we might strike gold there somewhere. As for Orin's
response, no, I knew he'd catch me! We're darn lucky that he's out there to
keep us straight. It's kind of like having two mothers-in-law! :-)

Actually Thomas, the son of Zachariah Sr., named his son William Thomas.
He was the travelling minister.
Thomas William may have been related to Jacob. They are listed on the same
page in the 1766 list of tithables for Loudon Co, but different men's
lists. On the 1776 list Jacob is listed with Moses and David, so perhaps
Moses is another son -- seems like I've seen that name Moses in SW VA. The
Dallas Library has quite a few records for Loudon County between 1760 and
the 1790s. I can research this area further if it will be useful.

Maybe, but such things DID happen!. Fascinating as we were wondering about
the Jacob on the land deeds about the same time as Zachariah. Is it
possible that Jacob Sr. had a son named Jacob?
Now, the name Jacob is interesting in and of itself. There was a family
which used the name Jacob frequently which was from North Carolina - in
Hannover and Duplin Counties. The first of the family was a Jacob born Cir
1700 often reputed to have been from Switzerland but logic refutes this.
Bottom line, we don't know where Jacob came from. I wonder if there is a
connection to the Louden Co. Jacob and this family? Does Zachariah somehow
fit in this line? More questions, no answers.

Wells. I'm ashamed to admit that I did not list sources since this is not my
Wells line. Anyway, I noted that in 1768, a Zachariah Wells "heir at law of
Thomas William Wells deceased" made a claim against the estate. This
couldn't be the same Zachariah who was the son of Jacob, could it? Note also
that the Lee County Zachariah's son Thomas named one of his sons "Thomas
William Wells." Does anyone have access to Loudoun Co. records and can
verify my old notes?

Hello all,
Well I found the father of one of the Zachariahs. On the Loudon County
List of Tithables taken in 1773 by William Douglass in the book"Virginia
County Records - Tithables Loudon County, Virginia 1770-1774" by Ruth & Sam
Sparacio, The Antient Press 1992, is the following entry:
Jacob Wells & Sons, Vizt. David, Zachariah & Jesse -4.
The name Jacob is intriguing and will certainly add to the confusion. I
found a deed some time ago in Deed Book 1 page 197 of Washington County, VA
12 Sep 1799 in which a Stokely Donaldson of Knox County, TN conveys 1,350
acres to the heirs of Jacob Wells (of Sullivan County, TN). I haven't had
any luck following this deed up.
However, these Jacob Wells were two different men. That is because the
Jacob of Loudon Co. is listed as deceased on a deed in Deed Book O pp 66-67
14 June 1784. On the Washington Co. deed, Donaldson acknowledges
receiving money from Jacob Wells during the lifetime of Jacob as the
consideration for the conveyance. It is highly unlikely that these men
would wait 15 years to write out a deed.
The 1820 tax list for Lee County, VA, includes two men by the name of
Zachariah Wells. We assume that these men are Zachariah Wells, Sr. and
Zachariah Wells, Jr.
I'm curious about another Zachariah Wells who appears in the 1820 Census for
Knox County, Kentucky. He is listed on Big Poplar Creek as age 45+. No one
else is listed in the household. However, next to him is listed William
Wells age 26-45 with a female aged 26-45, plus six male children and one
female child. Is this Zachariah Wells the same one who filed for a
Revolutionary Pension in Tennessee or is this yet another one?

Did some looking on-line for Rowan county stuff. In regards to some recent
topics, below are some findings that I came across. I am not sure if this
old news or new.
William Pennington listed as receiving Tory pensions from 1790 - 1826
1759 Tax list Rowan County
1790 Census Wilkes County, 10th Co.
Piniton,Micajah 3 3 4 0
Pinninton,Ben 1 2 5 0
Piniton,Elijah 1 1 3 0
I also did more county research. Earlier I listed counties that could have
info on Zachariah due to name change related to Wise/Lee County. I would
have to add Montgomery to the list formed 1777 from Fincastle and
Greenbrier in 1778 formed from Montgomery,Botetourt, and Augusta. Also
Wythe formed in 1790 but is unlikely to have Zachariah info, but could
have "relations" there.
The interesting thing about the counties and their formations is this. In
1773 Fincastle Zachariah had taxes paid for him by Herbert. At that time
Fincastle covered from what is now Kentucky to the north to North Carolina
to the south and was adjacent to : Surry County NC, which was formed from
old Rowan County. Wilkes was formed from Surry County.
So to be in Fincastle in 1773-4,then Wilkes in 1778 would not have required
much of a move possibly. Only stepping across the state line.
there are reference to Zachariah and Abigail Osborne as married, 1770 in
Grayson county. Well Grayson County did not exist until 1793. But the area
in which becomes Grayson county is the southern most part of Fincastle
County that boarders Old Rowan/Surry/Wilkes.
Therefore to try to help define searches and to help from wasting precious
research, I have revamped my counties to look in.
The big question is, when did Zachariah move west?
I theorize that records could be found in the following counties.
Augusta,VA - 1738-1769
Botetourt,VA - 1769(formation)-1772
Fincastle,VA - 1772-1777
Montgomery,VA - 1777-1778
Surry,NC - 1774-1777
Wilkes,NC - 1778-1799
Washington,VA - 1788-1793
Of course, he could have moved back east in the years where there are gaps.
I propose to help us in tracing Zachariah, that we start a time line.
People can add/correct info to it as they know it and can cut and paste it
into the e-mails so that we all have easy information to the facts for
reference.
I have started the time line only with a few facts, as it makes its rounds
things will get added. I believe this will give us some clues as to where
to direct our work. Many of the dates could be moot due to the actual birth
or death, but we don't not know either for fact so I included a wide range
of dates to start. Let's fill this thing in and then hit the books!

This Fincastle County connection of Zachariah Wells gets more interesting.
Recall that I mentioned that both Zachariah Wells and Ezekiel Young were
employees of William Herbert in Fincastle County, VA in 1773. Other records
also indicate that John Gess was also an employee of Herbert in 1773/4. Gess
also served as a scout in the Fincastle Co. Militia in 1774 as did Zachariah
Wells. Interestingly, both John Gess and Ezekiel Young appear in Loudoun
County, Virginia records in the late 1760's. Recall that there was another
Zachariah Wells whose family also lived in Loudoun County. A coincidence???

Does anyone know where the Pennington family lived prior to Wilkes Co., NC?
I check the John Montgomery District of the Fincastle Co., VA tax list and
there are not Penningtons listed. However, there was a George "Pemberton."

I have examples in my other lines where a "Jr." later became a "Sr." after
his (Jr.'s) son grew up and probably after the original Sr. died. The use
of the term "Sr." doesn't mean there was no "Sr.Sr."
Don
Someone has submitted some sort of proof of service because Zachariah Wells
is listed in the new D.A.R. Patriot Index as a North Carolina soldier. I
have searched, but I cannot find any proof of this assertion. I agree that
the Tory Zachariah is not the father of the Lee County Zachariah, but I know
nothing more about this other fellow. Is there anyone out there who can shed
some light on this?

Actually, I don't know if there is any proof of Zachariah Wells Sr. being a
patriot at all. I don't think the Tory Zachariah is his father since
Zachariah uses the "Sr.", but the proximity certainly suggests a possible
relationship.

John,
Regarding your statements about the Wells and Pennington families in
Wilkes Co. NC: I think there may have been connections prior to their
coming to Wilkes Co. This is just a theory of mine, but I believe the
faith and religious beliefs of these families may have been a common
bond. That would explain the biblical names in the Pennington family and
possibly their not being found in the war records. We know that
Zachariah was active in getting the Three Forks Church going and also a
branch of the Pennington family was active in getting an new church
formed at Oven Fork in Letcher Co. KY which was just over the mountain
from Wise, VA.
Are there any old church records from Wilkes Co. that could be checked
for membership names? What were the beliefs of the people from the area
where the Wells and Pennington families are found? One might find some
clues by searching out these things or has it already been done and I am
not aware of it?

I, too, have been curious about this other Zachariah Wells in Wilkes
County, NC. As we all know, he was hanged as a Tory in 1781 just a few
miles from the residence of Zachariah Wells "the patriot" who eventually
settled in Lee County, VA. The obvious questions is whether or not there is
a connection. Two men by the same name in the same county ... it sure makes
sense. However, the tax lists for Wilkes County never list more than a
single Zachariah Wells at one time. Do we know anything more about the Tory
Zachariah? To have been our Zachariah's father or uncle he would have had
to have been at least 62 when he was hung which is unlikely. However, he
could well have been a cousin. Surely, a Tory with so much written about
him must have more information about his origin out there somewhere!
BTW, what proof do we have that Zachariah Wells "the PAtriot" served in the
Patriot forces or aided the American cause? Just curious.
