Trying to make some sense about a great great grandmoth, Sophis Zabel. I think her full
name was Dorthea Sophia Zabel but all the documentation I have shows her name as Sophia.
The source documentation that I have starts with her marriage to a gggrandfather John
Sommerville in Summit, Wakesha, Wisconsin on October 12, 1860. Another source document is
one that list her daughter, Augusta Louise Sommerville, when she married in Nebraska. The
document states that Augusta is the daughter of Sophia and the step-daughter of John
Sommerville. Using dates in several Census's, Augusta would have been about a yrar old
when Sophia and John married. I have several census returns with Sophia and John with his
previous children (from his first marriage) and their children. Sophia died on March 30,
1904 in Avon, Eagle, Colorado.
It is apparent that Sophia had a child before her marriage to John. Whether she was
married or had the child out of wed-lock is not known.
An interesting thing is the 1860 census for Oconomowoc, Waukesha, Wisconsin. On the page
that shows the Sommerville family is a family who's name looks like eithe Zabel or
Sabel. Another point is the in that 'Zabel' family is a girl that is 2 years old
named Louisa. Might this be Augusta Louise / Louisa? No mentrion of her mother or of a
Sophia that is of age. There is a Sophia but she is 8 years old. Maybe names after her
Aunt? The census seems to match up with the Fredrick Zabel and his wife Hanna. It also
lists a Christian Zabel age 60.
From emails and other information it appears that Sophia was the
daughter of Christian Zabel and Anna Stressemann. There is no documjentation that proves
this but lots of interesting bit's.
The 1900 federal census has some interesting bit's in it. Sophia lists that she was
born in Germany in 1835. It also lists her immigration year as 1858. On what
'might' be her Immigration list )passenger list_ it list's a Dorthea Zabel as
being 20. The other names and ages dont match-up 100% but are fairly close.
My questions are these:
Was Sophia actually married before John? If so to who?
There is no proof of Sophia before she married John, where was she?
If that is the correct Zabel family on the 1860 census, where is Sofia?
I know that the Zabel family was a large group in Wisconsin and in Nebraska and Kansas.
Any information that helps tie her down will be greatfuly appreciated
Bob
