How can I thank you - you have helped me so much! (Of course I gave you the
address!! This research is making me senile!) Now I will start looking in
Leicestershire as well!! I wonder why their child was living with the
uncle? Perhaps his parents were getting too old!! William certainly was -
aged 80!
I will look for a will. I know there is something called "the Kingston
silver" in New Zealand with descendents of William and Elizabeth Hicks. I
didn't even know till 6 weeks ago that they had emigrated. Elizabeth was
the eldest child so I suppose that is why it went with her to NZ. I am
directly descended from William's 3rd son and I was a Kingston up till my
marriage.
The Hicks sailed to NZ from Gravesend so I will look in that area for them -
or maybe they went back to Portsea. Elizabeth and the daughters went on a
different ship to William and their son Charles and I haven't managed to
locate when they went. I would assume they went first to settle into a home
and get jobs before the women followed but that is only a guess.
William is buried in St Peters Churchyard, plot 715 according to my NZ
source. His son was still living in 1875 but I think the wife, Elizabeth
had died by then.
Thanks again and look forward to hearing from you if you get further info.
I don't know if the William Beatty Kingston was related but from my g.g.
grandfather down the family lived in Deptford, SE London. That is where I
was brought up!
Jean

You gave Clarence Terrace as an address from 1854. It happens to be where my
gggrandparents lived in 1871, so I know the location.
Here he is in 1861 census. Leicestershire rather than Lancashire.

Was William Beatty KINGSTON, b 1832 in London, in Cardiff 1861, any
connection?

The HICKS family seem to have left Glamorgan before 1861. Indeed I can't
find them in 1851 census either.
I work as a volunteer on the project indexing the 'Cambrian' newspaper and
will be in on Thursday. If I get the chance I will see what there is on
William KINGSTON, and cast around to see whether William HICKS is mentioned.
There are a lot of entries about Neath.
I am not sure exactly where Cwmdonkin Villa is/was. Of course the poet Dylan
Thomas was born in Cwmdonkin Drive, and his delightful piece 'A Child's
Christmas in Wales' describes the area.
I will send you separately an email linking to an 1884 map of the area
around Cwmdonkin. Judging by the size and status of the houses in the area I
would suspect that William Kingston may have been quite a wealthy man, and
it may be worthwhile looking for his will. His immediate neighbours seem to
have included the vicar of Sketty (who had married a daughter of one of the
wealthy local families), and the deputy lieutenant of Glamorgan.
You will need to click on the 'Enlarged View' on the old-maps site.
hope this helps.

Thank you so much for all the info. William Kingston was my g x3
grandfather and I have had great difficulty in tracing his birth and
death.
He was born in Lancashire (don't know where!)and, by tracing
backwards, I
found him in Hampshire (mainly Southampton and Portsea areas)where he
married Elizabeth Johnson in 1803. William Hicks married the eldest
daughter, Elizabeth Kingston and they moved to Wales but emigrated to New
Zealand in 1863. There seems to be some connection with the sea for
William
Kingston if you think about all the places he lived. His occupation
was
"Engineer" or "Civil Engineer", depending on where you read it! So
it is
funny you should say that Clarence Terrace was a "sea captain's" area. I
am
not sure what connection Clarence Terrace has with the info you gave
me -
could you clarify?
If you could find the article for me, I would be more than grateful.
In the meantime, I will carry on looking for his birth in Lancashire. I
am
awaiting a copy of his death certificate but I don't know if that
will
give
more info. He must appear in an 1861 census somewhere as he
didn't die
until July 1861 and I beleive the census was taken before that.
Many thanks again - I will look up the Llansamlet site.
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Jean
In 1841 William KINGSTON was in London Road, Neath, age 60, 'independent'
with Mary Ann KINGSTON, 20, presumably a daughter from an earlier
marriage.
They were living in the house of William HICKS, Collector,
[presumably tax
or parish or borough rates] age 35, wife Elizabeth 35 and children Mary 6
and William 3. Neither the HICKS family nor the KINGSTONs were born in
Glamorgan. The KINGSTONs were listed after a female servant, so were
presumably lodgers or boarders, rather than relatives.
This is the 1851 census at White House, Birchgrove
2464 1851 CENSUS OF BIRCHGROVE. REF.H.O.107/2464, E.D.1.

MOORE MARY SARAH GD - 14 SCHOLAR WAR BIRMINGHAM (c1837)
KINGSTON WILLIAM BL M 70 CIVIL ENGINEER LAN - (c1781)
KINGSTON ELIZABETH SC M 40 - IRL - (c1811)
KINGSTON GEORGE MOORE GS M 4M - GLA LLANSAMLET (c1850)
LLEWELYN MARTHA SV U 20 HOUSE SERVANT PEM LITTLE HAVEN (c1831)
The relationships are
SM = Stepmother BL=Brother-in-law SC= Stepsister GD= granddaughter and
GS

I leave you to work them out!
"This lookup was made using material published by Glamorgan Family History
Society, details of membership and their research service with a full list

There is quite a good site about Llansamlet local history.
http://www.page-net.com/swansea.localhistory/llansamlet/index.html
Moore is mentioned there in connection with a Copper works in 1866, but it
may not be the same man.
Moving to Cwmdonkin in the 1850s suggests that William may have had a
connection with the construction of the Cwmdonkin reservoir, which was
started by the Swansea Water Company ( which appears in contemporary and
local history accounts as a rather dodgy concern) but bought by the
Council
before it was finished. Although higher than the older Brynmill
reservoir,
so able to supply water to higher areas of the town, it proved
insufficient
and the Velindre reservoir was built not long after.
Clarence Terrace was a 'sea-captains' area near the sea front (and the
prison).
I hope this helps. Do you want the details of the 'Cambrian' article
looked
at?
