Hi All
Following on from the queries on Danycraig Cemetary I
would like to share my cemetary research with the
list.
I went to the offices at Southern Cemetary in
Manchester with no more information than a name and a
date of June 1926.
The most helpful staff gave me the "day" book for 1926
and I started looking. I soon found my PODMORE. The
entry gave a plot number where buried and a receipt
number for the funeral. The recipt was duly turned up
and gave details of address and the person who paid
for the funeral plus costs.
My next step was to check for a headstone, it was
missing.
Next step, the staff provided me with their Plot
register. This lists all burials in the plot. Names,
usually, but always a recipt number. Five recipt
numbers provided me with my wife's great grandparents
together with three addresses that we did not know
about. The records at Southern cemetary go back to
the beginning of the cemetary and could provide a
great deal of information.
Perhaps this method could be used in your local cematries.
