Betsy, I assume you have seen the Familysearch entry for a Henry GORVIN
baptism in Monkleigh, Devon. Not too far from Braunton. Quite a number of
Braunton people ended up in Swansea, because of relatively easy sea
communication. There were regular sailings between Swansea and Barnstaple
near Braunton.
<<I wonder if anyone has access to the marriage record of Henry
GORVIN &
Henrietta RICHARDS married in St Marys Swansea in Aug 1837? I would like
to
find out who Henry's Parents are (if they are listed or not??)
It gives Henry's home parish as Braunton Devon, and Henrietta's as St
Mary's
Swansea, but she does not appear in the baptsim register and may have
moved
in from another parish
Quite how close the North Devon coast is to Swansea was brought home to me
recently when my daughter was on the Driving Standards Agency web site and
had to put in our postcode to find the location to sit the driving theory
test.
The software to calculate the nearest test centre was obviously written
based on distances as the crow flies, rather than taking geographical
features such as the Bristol Channel into account. One of the nearest
centres to Swansea, apparently, is Barnstaple, only 37 miles!! By road it
is actually 172.
As a Government Agency presumably they out the software tender out to
contract, and got what they thought was 'Best Value'.
