Hello Jeff,
Thank you very very much you have found the right Hillards as Charles and
Catherine are my great grandparents and my mother recalls my grandmother
speaking of her brother Vivian.
Ellen HILLARD is in 1901 aged 7 months in a family in Canton, which is part
of Cardiff.
The rest of the family are Charles, 26, Flour Miller Labourer; Catherine,
25, Grocer; Vivian [a boy's name] 5; and Catherine, 2 - all born in Cardiff,
Glamorgan.
What you say about my grandfather Rasmus would explain why he doesn't show
up.
And again you are right my grandfather served in the Merchant Navy in the
1st world war and again in the second world war but sadly died and by this
time they were living in Australia.
and yes again my great grandparents (Jensen) came from Denmark.
This gives me much to work with, thanking you so much Jeff
Cheers
Jenny

Hello Jenny
The 1901 Census is at
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
There is a family in the 1901 census transcribed as JENSON who look like
yours.
Jesis Jenson 29 Denmark British Subject Glamorganshire Swansea
Marine
Enginer
Mary Jenson 27 Llandilo Carmarthenshire Glamorganshire Swansea
Beatrice Jenson 5 Llandilo Carmarthenshire Glamorganshire Swansea
Kenneth Jenson 7W Landore Glamorgan Glamorganshire Swansea
You may well want to go to this site and obtain a copy of this census
entry.
Kenneth may be a mistranscription.
Ellen HILLARD is in 1901 aged 7 months in a family in Canton, which is
part
of Cardiff.
The rest of the family are Charles, 26, Flour Miller Labourer; Catherine,
25, Grocer; Vivian [a boy's name] 5; and Catherine, 2 - all born in
Cardiff,
Glamorgan.
Also in Canton, and in similar occupations, so possibly related were this
HILLARD family
George, 24 , 'Beltrny Man at Flour Mill' [the original may be clearer] b
Cardiff
Martha, 21, b Newport, Monmouthsire
Emily, 2
and Alfred, 3months , both born Cardiff
It may be that George and Martha were enumerated twice, as there is a
different entry with George 24, Miller's labourer, B Cardiff and Martha
21,
b Newport
Also in Canton was a much older couple who might have been related
George HILLARD 65 , Stableman, b 'Briston', Somerset [ which might be
Bruton ]
Caroline HILLARD 68 , b 'Keinton Mandeville', Somerset
HILLARD seems to be a surname from Somerset, as all the older generation
of
this name in Glamorgan were from there. There was a HILLARD family
in
Cardiff, St Mary parish, consisting of Tom, 51, from Bruton, Somerset,
Shoe
maker, Mary, 50, from Langport, Som and Alice, 21, William, 17, ship
chandler's assistant, Edgar 15, a haulier, and Emily, 11, all born in
Cardiff. In Cardiff St John parish there was a TomHILLARD 26, haulier,
with
Mabel age 26, Mabel, aged 5 and Tom age 2.
In Familysearch you will find Tom and Mary, with children Tom and Alice,
in
Cardiff St Mary, though ages and places are a little different.
On FreeBMD
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ I think you will find a marriage
of Jens Marius JENSEN to Mary Louise GRIFFITHS in Swansea in the June
quarter of 1899.
There is also the birth of a Persis Mary J JENSEN in 1899 and a death of
the
same name in 1900.
Beatrice's birth does not seem to have been registered as JENSEN.
Your Rasmus JENSEN seems to have had his birth registered as Jensen Jens
Percy T R Swansea 11a 1036
in the March quarter of 1901.
That should give you a start. You will probably find HILLARDs on FreeBMD.
You may want to join the Rootsweb Glamorgan list , as this covers both
Cardiff and Swansea, and there are some very helpful listers who might
assist with 1891 census etc.
Llandilo would be covered by the Rootsweb Dyfed list, and there is also a
Somerset list once you chase your HILLARDs a bit further back.
JENSEN seems to have been a common name in Denmark, north Germany, Norway
and Sweden.
If he was a British subject and a sea-going engineer it is possible that
you
will be able to find records at the Public Record Office, either of
his
engineer's certificate, or of his service record if he also joined the
Royal
Naval Reserve - as did many Merchant Navy engineer officers.
Hope this helps
Jeff
