Hello, I am trying to help my sister in law find out about her natural
Grandfather. Frederick Smith son of William Smith licensed victualler. She had a
step grandfather and never knew her own Grandfather. He would be deceased now.
Frederick Smith was born about 1888/9. We do not know where.
Details from the marriage certificate to Polly Moss born in 1888 Swansea are.
Polly Elizabeth Moss Married Frederick Smith.
23 July 1914
Polly E Moss and Frederick Smith were both given as 25 years old in 1914 on
marriage certificate(Natural Grandparents)
Frederick Smith's occupation was given as Engineer.
His Father William Smith was given as a Licensed Victualler.
Polly E Moss Father was Charles Thomas Moss .(He was born Ledbury
Herefordshire.)
Address given as 10 Inkerman St, Swansea, St Thomas
They lived there aftter their marriage and moved to 3 Inkerman St.
10 Inkerman St was the home of Polly E Moss and family.
They had two Children Eunice Smith(my sister in laws Mother)
and Jack Smith (John)
Eunice Sarah Jane Smith daughter of Polly and Frederick was born 20th
November 1916
Parents Frederick Smith and Polly Smith formerly Moss.
Frederick Smith was given as an Engineer Mine Sweeper (Shipper Fuel Works)
Swansea
They were living at 3 Inkerman St Thomas Swansea (Has anyone heard of this
occupation?)
I know about Polly Smilth formerly Moss family history but we know nothing
about Frederick Smith other than the marriage certificate.
I found a William Smith Licensed Victualer in the 1901 Census age 29 living
in Swansea.
William SMITH 29 24626077 14701137 1872 LICENSED VICTUALER Swansea Glam
Swansea Glamorganshire.
I could not find a Frederick Smith in the household.

However as this William Smith was only 10 in 1901 and was supposed to be 25
in 1914 at his marriage he seems a little young.
Polly Smith formally Moss was in the 1901 Census
Details using an emulater.
Charles MOSS 43 1858 Hertford In Shire ( NOT CLEAR WRONGLY TRANSCRIBED)
Sarah MOSS 39 1862 Cheltenham Gloucestershire
Charles MOSS 16 1885 Swansea Glamorgan son
Polly MOSS 13 1888 Swansea Glamorgan Daughter
William MOSS 0.75 9M 1900 Swansea Glamorgan son
In 1884 at the time of their marriage Charles Thomas Moss was 24 years
working in Patent Fuel Works He was still there in 1891.
We have searched through the usual channels for a divorce between Polly Smith
formally Moss and Frederick Smith. The marriage broke up around 1916. It cost
£40 to search for the divorce and it was not found.
I thought about looking at the Electoral Register for Swansea in 1915/1917 to
see where Frederick Smith was in Swansea. I live a long way off in
Lancashire.
Can anyone advise any other way of trying to find out about Frederick Smith's
family and history.
Any advice would be appreciated.
sincerely, Jacqui White
