The registers mentioned below are a limited subset of all UK BMD registers,
described as follows
"The Official Non-Parochial BMDs Service
For records of birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial taken from non
parish sources"
This is a commercial web site Copyright © 2007 Genealogy Supplies (Jersey)

They do not seem to include Births or Deaths at Sea, which are searchable at
findmypast.com, with payment or subscription for access to images.
There seems to be no regulation preventing commercial companies using
phrases like 'The Official... '
For the majority of researcher BMDs means Births Marriages and Deaths
registrations. The indexes may be searched free at
www.freebmd.org.uk for
England and Wales. This is a work in progress and years 1837 to about 1920
are well covered.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/progress.shtml gives a good idea
of current coverage.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ is a charity registered in
England and Wales, number 1096940 and transcriptions are the work of over 10
thousand volunteers.
Should you wish to join over 10 thousand volunteers who have transcribed
entries for FreeBMD, follow the link from Join FreeBMD on the FreeBMD home
