Thanks, HJ, but I'm still doubtful as to whether a "Copperman" has anything
to do with the metal "copper", as compared to "Coppersmith", for
example.
When I was a boy, we had an outside washroom with a "copper" in it - a large
metal container over a bricked fireplace, used for boiling up the weekly
wash, before washing machines came along. At sea, similar "coppers" were
used aboard sailing ships in the galley, for cooking. I didn't mention this
in my posting, in the hope that something related to it might come up,
without having been prompted by me!
I'm wondering whether a Copperman might have been employed in the rendering
down of tallow, but a search of the internet hasn't come up with anything
yet.
Best wishes
Barry

He would have worked in a Copper Works. Swansea was known as
"Copperopolis"
in the mid to late 1800's. Many changed their jobs for the better
paying
ones in copper works.
