Dear List,
Have just subscribed in the hope that someone will save my sanity!
I am researching the above tree on behalf of a friend. I am not a novice, but this one is
driving me completely batty!
JOSEPH JENKINS BORN (ACCORDING TO 1901 CENSUS AND MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF 1889) 1864 IN
SWANSEA
FATHER WILLIAM JENKINS COAL MINER
I can find no real trace of him on previous census, and I'm subscribed to
Ancestry.Com, so have access to 1871- 1901. I don't expect to find him on 1891 as he
supposedly emigrated to Scranton Pensylvannia USA shortly after marrying in 1889 expecting
his wife to follow, but she refused and he returned sometime between his marriage date and
the birth of his first child IDRIS JENKINS 1897 in PORTH. By occupation he was a COLLIERY
TIMBERMAN BELOW GROUND and at the time of his marriage lived at
53 CARDIFF ROAD, TROEDYRHIW, MERTHYR. He was 25 when he married and 54 when he died in
1920 which would make his birth year around 1866. I have looked at Passenger Lists to
Phladelphia from 1883-1945, but nothing really shouts at me. I don't have access to
an indexed 1890 census for Pensylvania (there is only an extract available on the
internet). I have been over and over the census and through The Catherines House Index
and I know he's right in front of my eyes under some other name or birth date, but I
can't get any sons and fathers to marry up. The friend for which I am researching
knows nothing about either Joseph or his father William except what I have mentioned. He
married ELVIRA DAVIES, daughter of BENJAMIN DAVIES. Can anyone help? Perhaps SWANSEA was
a generic term and he meant somewhere in the area of Swansea. Perhaps he is recorded
under a name other than Joseph. I'd be so grateful for some pointers.
Heres hoping and thank you,
Julie
