Hello Mona,
Swansea was called "Copperopolis" in the mid-late 1800's.
People later went into other metal industries, e.g.Tinplate. Of course the
area was also an important coal mining area.
I have Rees connections. Do you have any information on yours?

Subject: [Swansea] coppersmelters and miners
Hi! I hope someone can help me out here. My immigrant ancestors were
coppersmelters from South Wales. They continued to work as smelters in
Baltimore, MD, for many years.
I have lost track of some of the brothers and their families. I know the
coppersmelting business hit a big decline and a lot of folks moved. My
question is: would former coppersmelters be attracted to mining work if
smelting were no longer availoable? Or, what other occupations should I
begin looing at for these former Welsh smelters in the US?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Mona
