The 'parcel' or 'hamlet' of Clase was a sub-division of the Parish of
Llangyfelach which included not only modern Morriston but also Landore and
Brynhyfryd down to the boundary of the parish of St John-juxta-Swansea,
which ran across Llangyfelach Road by the Plough Inn.
However the clue to location is in the places enumerated before and after it
in 1851 - Gorsllan and Bryntowad (Bryntywod).
I have found Maes-melin on a pre-M4 street map of Swansea in a somewhat
dilapidated condition. I am not sure whether it survives or was demolished
for the M4.

should be copied and pasted to get an aerial photo and overlay road map.
Bryn-tywod is the settlement of houses just north of the A48, off the old
road to the former Velindre tinplate works. On my old map Maes-melin is on
an unfenced road which continues east from Bryntywod in the area between the
A48 and the M4, just west of J46. I am not sure whether Maes-melin is still
there, or was knocked down when the motorway cutting was made.
I'll scan a bit of my old map for you.

Subject: [Swansea] Where is Maesmelin?
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me where in Clase
Maesmelin
is or was? My interest lies with the THOMAS family who are listed in the
1841, 1851 and 1881 censuses as living here. 1881 census spells it
Maesymelyn.I have looked at the Old Maps site, and also a modern street of
the Morriston/Clase area but cannot find it - the only reference to
Maesmelyn is Port Talbot, which seems too far away.
Many thanks
Valerie
