Thanks Jeff for doing the look up.
No idea where they have disappeared to now. I wonder if any of the
dressmakers you mention were married Davies?Justina worked as as dressmaker
prior to her death. Maybe the daughters followed?
Being orphans I suppose they went their separate ways. George joined the
Welsh Fusiliers and went to India. James John was to follow him to India in
the 1870's. David the elder brother was over there too.o idea of what
happened to the girls.
No I haven't been able to check any trade directory's - I would certainly
appreciate any help in that direction.
William Edward Davies a tailor? Swansea?
When James John Davies was christened in 1864 (aged 13) the certificate
states he was living in Swansea. The actual event took place in Carmarthen.
They must be out there somewhere!!!
Thanks again
Happy New Year

Subject: Re: [Swansea] Gomerian Place, Swansea census 1861
Hi
I have checked the 1861 census - ref 4103 folio 37-38 p9-11 for Gomarian
Place ( this spelling was used then, and in each census 1871, 81,1891.
There
was no-one living there with the surname Davies. It seems to have
been a
small street or court, with only 12 houses, and, judging by where it was
enumerated, it must have been off the East side of Waterloo Street,
possibly
north of Temple Street. It is not shown either on the 1851 map in
the
'Swansea Guide 1851' or the 1878 map on the wall of the Family History
searchroom in County Hall.
It was in the part of the centre of Swansea totally destroyed in the 1941
'three days blitz', and after the war the street pattern was completely
different. If you know Swansea today it would probably be under David
Evans
Store, Princess Way or British Home Stores - as far as I can guess-
if not
the skateboard-infested white elephant known as Castle Square.
I have a feeling that it may be shown in some of John Alban's history
books
about Swansea.
Several occupants of Gomarian Place had occupations connected with
sewing -
I think a dressmaker and a milliner.
I hope this is helpful.
If you have not searched Swansea trade directories for later addresses,
please let me and the rest of the list know.
