The obvious reason is the copper trade. Swansea was the greatest copper
smelting centre in the world at the time, using Cornish ore as well as other
sources. However travel by sea from Cornwall to Swansea was a lot easier
than travelling very far by land, until the railways came.

My Phillips also emigrated from redruth to Swansea in 1830-40s. Is there
a historical significance why some went from Redruth to Swansea or is this
just a coincidence.
