From St Mary's parish Church, Swansea, registers
May 9th 1822 Thomas SHUGG of this parish, Bachelor married Elizabeth MORRIS
of this parish, Spinster by banns. Both made their mark rather than signing
the register. They were married by W HEWSON, vicar, and the witnesses were W
THOMAS and William DAVIES
January 7th ( possibly 11th) 1824 was baptised Thomas the son of Thomas and
Elizabeth SHUGG, mariner, born March 9th 1823 by W HEWSON ( one of three
apparently unrelated children baptised the same day)
November 6th 1838
David EVANS of full age, Bachelor, Butcher, of Bethesda Street, son of David
EVANS, Farmer
married
Elizabeth SHUGG of full age, Widow, of Bethesda Street, daughter of Morris
MORRIS, Auctioneer
after Banns. I think the signature is of W.HEWSON, D.D., vicar of Swansea
Both signed the register. Witnesses were Henry JONES and Evan DANIEL
In 1841 census David and Elizabeth EVANS, both shown as 35 [i.e. aged 35 to
39, given the census rules] were in High Street, Swansea. David was a
Butcher. Neither was born in Glamorgan.
In 1851 census David EVANS, butcher,45 b Carmarthenshire, Llanarthney and
Elizabeth EVANS 48 b Carmarthenshire Llandilo were living in High Street,
Swansea, with a son Harding EVANS age 8 born Glamorgan,Swansea
The birth of Harding EVANS was registered in Swansea registration district
in December quarter 1843, vol 26 page 495 (from FreeBMD)
In 1861 census David EVANS, butcher, 57 b Carmarthenshire Llanarthney and
Elizabeth EVANS 59 b Carmarthenshire Llandilo were at Carmarthen Road,
Swansea with son Harding EVANS, 17, butcher born Swansea.
In the 'Cambrian' index
www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian there are a number of
items which turn up if you search on 'David Evans Butcher' 'all words'
and
I strongly suspect that several refer to this man - possibly 1836, probably
1842, 1845 twice, 1847, 1848 twice.
DEATHS, DEATH NOTICES 12 April 1867 ON 5 APRIL AT HOME IN CALIFORNIA STREET,
SWANSEA, ELIZABETH, WIFE OF DAVID EVANS, BUTCHER, AGE 66.
The name California Street or California Row seems to have applied to the
lower part of Carmarthen Road, so I strongly suspect that this was the
former Elizabeth SHUGG nee MORRIS. My guess is that she was probably buried
in Danygraig cemetery, the index for which has been published by Glamorgan
FHS.
There are quite a lot of references in the Cambrian to the son, Harding
EVANS, butcher, who seems to have adopted the modern practice of describing
exactly which farms his animals came from. By 1900 Harding EVANS seems to
have retired to live in Mumbles, at Greenfield Terrace.
There are three public member trees on Ancestry which seems to refer to
Harding EVANS, but two of them seem to have the wrong parents, and the other
has no parents, but says he had 9 children. He appears to have married Mary
Jane PHILLIPS in September quarter 1865 in Swansea, but one of the trees on
Ancestry has him married to Mary Jane DENDLE.
There are some references in the Cambrian to Morris MORRIS, but they seem to
refer to a number of different people, and none may refer to Elizabeth's
father.
'Llandilo' is the modern Llandeilo, the old parish of Llandilofawr. The
Dyfed Rootsweb list may be able to assist with records for the area.

Hi Graham'
No, I don't have any indication of where she was born. But she appears to
remarry in 1838, and a kind lister has told me he will try to check in the
local Archives, in the next week. That should give a clear indication of
her
father.
I suspect she was born in the Swansea area, and there is an IGI baptism
which seems reasonable.

That's all I have to go on at the moment. Many thanks for your offer. I
may
email and take it up when I have more information to go on.
Kind regards,
Rowena in Melbourne

Hello again Rowena.
You mentioned you were also looking for the parentage of Elizabeth SHUGG
nee
MORRIS.
Where was she born do you know?
Was she enumerated in the 1851 & 1861 censuses?
If so,You should have a Birth Place.
If she was born in Swansea, then let me know and I shall have a look in the
Parish Registers for you.
Cheers Graham.
