Could SKS with access to Glam census 1861 lookup whether Joseph/Agnes GOSS
and family were still living at 41 E.Side of Love Lane, Cardiff(west
central). Particularly looking for dau Susanna, b 1826 and Charles b 1848.

Hi Karen & Nick,
So Nick we share the same ggggrandparents. I only sarted researching them
about 5 months ago, but had nothing to go on except that my ggranfathers name was Graham Hector Hilton and that he died at sea. Some kind sole looked up the 1881 census & found the only Hiltons in Swansea were Margaret Hilton from Carlisle born in 1823 living with her grandson Graham Hector who was 10. Of course without a maiden name it was imposible to look for her. I did find a William Hilton born Carlisle 1848 which seemed to fit. I took a chance & sent for b'cert & of course he was the son of Willliam Hilton & Margaret Bullman.( I also have info on Mararets side) William & Margaret had 8 children, 2 died at birth then there was Christopher, William (my gggrandfather) Margaret Ann, Thomas & Bulman Hilton. William was a stonemason/builder & Margaret was a milliner. Williams parents were Thomas Hilton & Ann Johnston married in 1817. At the moment I am trying to trace this Thomas's father & place of birth. The Hiltons in Carlisle are covered very well on the IGI index so there are lots of lines to follow. If you get a chance to look up the 1871 census for me I would be very grateful. The Hiltons should be at Dunvant maybe or the parish of St Mary's. At the moment I cannot find out if all the children moved to Swansea & if so what happened to them.
It;s good to find another relative, let me know something about yourselves
Regards Rita
Hello
I was totally amazed to read your message this morning. Only Friday, I was in the Library looking for Margaret Ann Hiltons marriage. She is my gggrandfathers sister.
Margaret was the daughter of William & Margaret Hilton both born in Carlisle.
There were no Hiltons in Swansea before 1861, but the family moved to Swansea
sometime between 1861 & 1868, because William died in Dunvant in 1868. Though
I have information of the family in Carlisle, I cannot find the deaths for the other children of William & Margaret. Your message today answered my search for the marriage of Margaret Ann. I am a Hilton myself & was born in Swansea though now
living in Aylesbury. So if you are related to Margaret Ann Hilton then we must be related also.
If you want more info contact me off list at rita(a)watermead38.fasnet.co.uk

Does anyone know anything about the following people;
Margaret Ann Hilton who married Henry Richards whose daughter Frances Annie Maria was born 27th Feb 1874?
When Frances was born the family were living in Sketty Lower Swansea
G'day one & all,
Have just sub'd to your list, so thought I'd post my family interests & see how I go!
I'm looking for any connections to &/or info on my GGGrandfather, Joseph THOMAS (good name to pick eh?!).
He was born about 1839 & came to South Australia in 1855 on the ship 'Glentanner'. I assume he may be on the 1851 census, aged about 17 - hopefully SKS may be able to look him up for me. I have a few bits 'n' pieces on his family in Oz, but his life in Wales & his ancestors are a mystery thus far.
Cheers
Michelle in Sth Oz.

Hi Listers,
I am trying to trace my grandmother's family, in particular the children of
Henry Stephen RICHARDS b. 1866 in Briton Ferry. He married Lucy ? in 1889
and had Frank RICHARDS in abt 1889, William Henry RICHARDS in 1891, Laura
Irene RICHARDS in 1893 and Dorothy Daisy RICHARDS in 1895. On the 1891
census they were living at 20 James St. Swansea and they were still at this
address in 1922/23 when my grandmother Florence Matilda FLINN and my mother
visited them from South Africa. In the 1950's we were visited in Rhodesia
by I think one of the children of the above and I think her name was Rhoda
Richards.
If anyone knows of the descendants of any of the above I would be delighted
to hear from them.
Thank you.

I am trying to trace the birth and early family details of Henry Evans who
was born in Garnant about 1843. Also location on the 1851 census.
I don't know his parents names but believe he had a brother John and a sister
Jane (Jennet).
As a boy he later moved to Swansea (Cwmbwrla) when his father took a job at
either the local steel works or the Cwmfellin tin works, although this must
have been after 1851 because the family do not appear on the 1851 Glamorgan
census.
>From a young age Henry Evans was a poet and composer writing over 100 hymns
and prayers although he never sought recognition for his work, publishing
them under 'Anon'. He wrote in welsh and then translated them into english;
one of his works was 'Hanes Bwyd Iesi Grist i Blant' ('Life Story of Jesus
Christ for Children'). His final work, a hymn he wanted sung over his grave
was 'Trauthawd a Iesi ar Mor a Iesi ar Tir'
Henry Evans was a deacon of Caersalem Chapel in Swansea and had the Bardic
name of "Apollos" he died around 1878 at Bryngelly Row, Treboeth, leaving a
wife Margaret (nee Jones) and seven daughters - Mary, Jane, Martha,
Elizabeth, Margaret, Harriet and Hannah (Hannah was my grandmother). Their
details are:-
Mary Ann born c. 1860
Jane born c. 1863 married ? Ball
Martha born c. 1866 married John Bynon (Beynon)
Elizabeth born c. 1868 married ? Scott
Margaret born c. 1870 married ? Davies
Harriet born c. 1874
Hannah born 28/4/1877 married George Jenkins (grandson of Thomas
Jenkins)

Stuart

My Great Grandfather, John Hopkins was born Aug 1866 in Cymmer, Wales- (by
family records...no hard copy documents to verify). He died in September of
1940,Wales. His wife was Sarah Williams, b. abt 1867 in Cardiff?, d. Dec 8,
1932,Wales.
Family Stories tell me that John was a coal miner in the Rhondda Valley.
There was a huge mine disaster and John was accredited to saving numerous
lives. There is supposed to be some sort of Monument erected in Swansea in
his honor. There is also supposed to be a Height named after him.

not to be my Great Grand parents.

Hi Listers
I have discovered that my gtgrandfather Thomas William GORDGE lived in Fleet
St (1881) and then Rodney St (1891) in Swansea and was a leather tanner.
Can anyone tell me please which/where is the most likely tannery he would
have worked at, and which was the nearest non-conformist chapel or Quaker
Meeting House.
Many thanks
Eluned in Brisbane
Hi Tom,
I havn't actually got any connections to your names but I do have Rolfe's
around 1876, Bolitho about 1874 and Cadle around 1877 all in Swansea. Would
it be too much trouble for you to see if you have any of these names in your
records, any help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Glenys ( in a very hot South Australia)

Eluned,
The nearesr nonconformist church to Rodney & Fleet Streets is SPRING TERRACE
BAPTIST.Others a bit further away are BRUNSWICK METHODIST,ARGYLE
CALVINISTIC METHODIST and ST ANDREWS CONGREGATIONAL. They are all in
ST HELENS ROAD and the present FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE is in PAGE ST.
The original was in the HIGH ST and the burial ground is still there.
I have bee trying to remember where there were tanneries, but I am certain
there
were none in the SANDFIELDS.However,I have forwarded your message to the
Cambrian Index in the Swansea Library for their help.
I have a sister in Brisbane, but that is not for this list.
Kind Regards,
Tom Morgan
