Hi Jim,
Welcome from a very sunny and hot Rhayader.
Breconshire, Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire were the names of the old
counties which were amalgamated
in the 1970s into the one administrative county of Powys.
Local government reorganisation has taken place a number of times and many
of the smaller Parish councils now no longer exist.
When the elections for a member of Parliament come around then Brecon &
Radnor become one unit having one member and Montgomery having one, all due
to population numbers.
We still prefer the old County names. In Powys FHS we have three groups
representing the old counties.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [WLS-RAD] A History Lesson re Rhayader please
On 14 May 1895 Robert PAYNE my great granduncle married a widow
Harriet
LAMBSDEN (nee PAYNE) in the Register Office, Rhayader, in the Counties of
Radnor & Brecon.
When I look at the Country Codes Wales (WLS) and the counties/shires BRE
Brecknockshire; RAD Radnorshire I see that Radnor and Brecon are given as
separate counties. Could SKS please give this "Kiwi" a short history
lesson
as to when they became one and why do I now find Rhayader as part of
POWYS.
[Harriet is only related by marriage as far as we know at the present time
even after searching. Her father was a Lance Sergeant in the Barracks,
Watton Brecon in 1881 24th Regiment]
