Hi Jim,
Just a few lines on the Goldbys from the Elan Valley , well just 2 miles
down the road.
1901 Census
Living at Number 12 Elan Valley.
[This would have been one of the wooden buildings erected during the
contruction of the Reservoirs]
Henry Goldby Head Married 41 Railway Engineer/fitter born Northampton
Sarah Jane Wife Married 35 b. Northampton
William Son 9 b. Yorkshire
Benjamin Brother 38 Fitters labourer b.Northampton
Herbert A Son 5 b. Breconshire Llanwrthwl
Then there are 7 Boarders.
This was the standard with one main family taking in a number of other
workers.
After the Dams were built these temporary building were removed and a new
village built with stone house and to a very high standard. The Goldbys
remained and I can remember Bert in the 1940s. He would have retired about
1951 on a pension from the Birmingham Corporation Water Department. On
retirement he would have to had vacated the house and as far as I know left
the district. I can find no trace of a burial in the local churches.
In Cwmdauddwr Parish Church there is a Roll of Honour which records those
who fought in WWI. Listed on 'Active Service' is William Goldby RAF
'Home Service' Herbert Goldby' RAF
In Llanwrthwl Parish Church a similar Roll of Honour records
A. Goldby Elan Village
W.J. Goldby Elan Village
It is only the river Elan that separates the two parishes and as they would
have most likely attended both churches this would be the reason why the are
recorded in both.
Bert did not marry as far as I can remember, he did walk out with a Miss
Vaughan, who was housekeeper to the Cwmdauddwr Vicar.
It may be worth writing to the Central Library in Birmingham to enquire if
they still have the records of the Water Department, and also details of the
pensioners. This could reveal his last address and then a place of burial.
I'll try and make some more enquiries locally and let you know the outcome.
Regards
Lloyd

Subject: [WLS-RAD] GOLDBY and PAYNE in Wales c1896>
I am still researching or my great grand uncle and aunt, Henry GOLDBY
and
Sarah Jane PAYNE. Henry GOLDBY, the son of William and Charlotte GOLDBY
was
born c 1859 in Harlestone, NTH, ENG. Sarah Jane PAYNE, the daughter
of
James
PAYNE and Harriet BEEBY, was born c 1867 Great Addington, NTH, ENG.
Henry
was an Engine Fitter at Harlestone, NTH, ENG in 1881 and a "Railway
Engineer
-Fitter" at Llanwrthwl, Brecknockshire, WALES in 1901. Henry and
Sarah
Jane
were married Great Addington, NTH, ENG in 1890.
Their known children were William J born Romaldkirk, YKS, ENG 22 August
1891
and Herbert A Llanwrthwl, Brecknockshire, WALES 1896. The family was
living
in Elan Village, Llanwrthwl, Brecknockshire, WALES and Benjamin b
c1863,
the
brother of Henry, was also living with them. Another one of
Henry's
brothers, Herbert born c 1868, was probably also living in the same town
but
their father was still in Harlestone.
The family probably stayed on in Wales after the competition of the Elan
project early in the 1900s. Eliza Ann (Cissie) PAYNE b 1909 d/o William
PAYNE and Catherine CALLAGHAN spent much of her early life with her aunt
Sarah Jane (nee PAYNE) after her father died in 1913. Cissie, who was
described as a 32 year old spinster of Glanwye, Newbridge-on-Wye, married
Herbert Octavius CORNER a 34 year old bachelor of 42 Isghorn Road,
Harlsden,
Willlesden, Middlesex, a fitter, s/o of Christopher CORNER on 31st
May
1941
in All Saints Church, Newbridge-on-Wye, County of Radnor, Wales. The
two
witnesses were W J GOLDBY and H A GOLDBY who probably were still living in
the area
(Unfortunately the marriage was of short duration as Cissie died at
Willesden, Middlesex in 1944)
Are there any GOLDBYS (or their descendants) still living in this area?
