Dear Listers
Tomorrow, Wednesday 13th September, is 'Migration Day' for this mailing
list -- the day on which RootsWeb is scheduled to migrate the List to the
new Mailman list management system. We do not know at what time the
changeover will occur, merely that it is scheduled for some time tomorrow.
The migration process for Lists whose names begin with A to U (e.g. Dyfed,
Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, and Powys) has already taken place. In some cases
the changeover has not been as trouble-free as one would have hoped, but
let's cross our fingers and hope that like the Powys List, the migration of
this List goes smoothly.
As a List member, you should have received an e-mail notification directly
from RootsWeb a few weeks ago, but in case you missed it a copy is appended
to the bottom of this e-mail. Please read it and take note of the changes to
the List addresses. You may wish to check the Powys Mailing List website
(
www.jlb2005.plus.com/powyslist.htm) for a reminder of how mailing lists
work. If you substitute the name of this list for Powys, where appropriate,
the information and addresses given on the website will be correct and up to
date.
Should any messages be posted to this List after the migration has taken
place, you may notice some differences, especially if you are subscribed to
the List in Digest mode. By default, Listers subscribed in Digest Mode will
receive each digest as a continuous plain text message. If you wish to
receive your digest as an e-mail bearing its messages as separate
attachment, you will need to request this by writing directly (off list) to
the appropriate list adminstrator at one of the following addresses:
wls-breconshire-admin(a)rootsweb.com
wls-montgomeryshire-admin(a)rootsweb.com
wls-radnorshire-admin(a)rootsweb.com
If you are currently subscribed under the same email address to both Mail
Mode and Digest Mode, you will no longer receive any Digests because the new
system does not allow the same address to be subscribed in both modes.
Kind regards
John Ball and Julie Preston

Subject: RootsWeb Mailing Lists are being Updated
Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber,
We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the
RootsWeb.com
mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system.
Why?
The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam
control, and more efficient hosting of the lists.
When?
All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it
will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the
additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the
link below.
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html
This page can also be found by following the link found on
http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule,
we'll update this page to let you know.
How will it Affect You?
Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new
system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s),
however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled
by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s).
Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume
and issue numbers of the list digests.
The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means
the
"from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly
different- ListName(a)rootsweb.com vs. the current
ListName-L(a)rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or
put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being
caught in your "junk" folder.
This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you
use the list.
Here's why:
- You will still be able to send messages to the list using the
"ListName-L(a)rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you
can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to
ListName(a)rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been
migrated.
- You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or
digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
or ListName-D-request(a)rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be
able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your
"unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request(a)rootsweb.com.
The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be
changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an
additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial.
We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel
confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run
smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make
this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue
to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research.
Thanks,
The Rootsweb Staff
