My Radnorshire interest is before 1690; after that, my direct ancestors
were in Pennsylvania. The location is the parish of Llainhangel yr
Helygen, which comes from Hinshaw's Quaker records of the Philadelphia
Monthly Meeting. I've been told that the location is Llandowi--but I
may have these names very wrong. I'm trying to locate them on a
contemporary map. Any assistance would be welcome.

Hi Lawrence,
The spelling of the two place-names you've quoted is possibly one reason
you've had trouble locating them on modern maps.
"Llainhangel yr Helygen" should be Llanfihangel-helygen;
"Llandowi" (if it is in Radnorshire) is possibly a reference to the
parish of Llanddewi Fach.
The other reason for not finding them is that Llanfihangel-helygen and
Llanddewi Fach are the names of parishes. Parish names are not usually
identified on modern maps unless they correspond with the name of a
village.
Llanfihangel-helygen parish is located around grid reference SO046644
which are the coordinates of the parish church (St Michael's). This is
on an unclassified road about 1 mile north of Llanyre near Llandrindod
Wells.
Llanddewi Fach parish is located around grid reference SO140450, just
south of Llanbedr on the B4594 road. There is a property (probably a
farm) called "Llanddewi" in the parish at SO132444. The parish church
(St David's) is at SO146455.
Go to the Streetmaps website at
www.streetmap.co.uk/ and select
Landranger grid. Then type any of the coordinates quoted above into the
search field. A section of a detailed Ordnance Survey Landranger map
will be displayed, with the chosen location marked with a red arrow.
The two parishes are about 13 miles apart. However, I suppose it's
possible there is (or was) a small property called Llanddewi in the
parish of Llanfihangel-helygen, and not marked on the maps I'm using.
