Hi,
I have been racking my brain wondering how I managed to miss the wagon at
Les Oakes but realise when I last looked at the items in storage I wasn't
interested in family history research. I had no idea then that I was a
Hamer descendant and although born in Montgomeryshire, a neighbouring county
I had not heard of Llanbadarn Fynydd so even if I saw it I wouldn't be
particularly interested in it except for what it was.
I am going to phone Mavis Oakes this morning to ask if I can look at the
cart and photograph it as often when we are there the storage areas are
locked.
I agree the buildings are wonderful. At weekends the farm is very busy when
people turn up to see if there is "just the piece of wood" needed for the
latest DIY job, perhaps you need a drainpipe which has been recovered from
some site or other items that just can't be bought at the local DIY store.
Everyone in this area knew Les and he could often be seen driving one of his
horse and carts through the town. We were stunned when we heard of his
death from a road traffic accident.
It would be advisable to phone first to check on opening times if you intend
visiting [I can pass on the number to anyone interested]. Another thing, it
is Cheadle in Staffordshire and not Cheadle in Cheshire even the Red Arrows
Display Team managed to get it wrong on one occasion!
Thank you for posting your item on the list, I am of course disappointed
that it didn't belong to one of my Hamers but it is wonderful news for
Angela.
Regards,
Margaret

Hello Angie,
Good news. My little job is now done and Thomas' kin are aware of where
his waggon is being kept.....absolutely safe and sound.
I have no knowledge of the HAMER clan so cannot say anything on that
score.
Sufficient that you could some day call and see it ...handle
it......even
have your photo taken standing by it with that address by your shoulder ,
eh ??? It has to be close to a ton in weight....top class
workmanship.......still in perfect condition...not even worm holes that I
could see......but, of course, it is undercover with many other such
pieces, in purpose built brick bldgs ...and WHAT bldgs they are !! The
whole place is an absolute eye opener and if you could get an opportunity
to visit then do so....no charges of any sort are made ! The place ?
Just outside Cheadle, STS, and is called ' Les Oakes' '.....everyone in
that part of the world knows of it.
By the way, another body who has HAMER links and has shown interest is
also
known to you.
Margaret Harvey mailto:bgh-mgh@teanstaffs.fsnet.co.uk and she lives but 2
or 3 miles from 'Les Oakes' place....knows it well but obviously has never
spotted this particular wagon with its HAMER address.
All the best and lots of luck,
Regards,
Lakhri in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
