Subject: Chat group lists
I tend to agree with Jim Duggan that closing down old
county lists for the benefit of the broader new county
amalgation may dilute the value of the former, though
optimise activity of the latter.
However, I'm just happy to be a member of both Radnor
and Powys groups, as well as the Powys FHS - which provides
a new perspective. For example, I've had significant
break-throughs of some brick walls - by belonging to
the above 2 chat groups, and even another MAJOR break-through
on a Welsh ancestor via my West Yorkshire FH links!
Powys FHS mags are full of useful links too eg welsh photo
archives, NB index look-ups.
I have made contact too with distant cousins via an alert FHS
secretary overhearing a conversation in a local library about
our shared family name.
Ironically I have had little response to my family names
"research" ! viz
Knighton Links - BAKER* - CLEE* - PRINCE - OSTINS - PRINCE - TANNER
Llanbister Links - GREENWOOD* - HAMAR
*Major ancestor names
I also support Julie's view that the chat group lists often give good
practical advice on willingly-shared experiences and suggestions:
some of which may be on a very local level eg those obscure Welsh
placenames and farms! or at a more regional/national level eg
data sources. Maybe the old county lists are better for the "local"
research
