Dear Lloyd
That is very kind of you, and much appreciated if you have the time. These
are the details I have for Thomas Joseph, my great great grandfather. Most
of the information has come via the Forest of Dean list, because he moved
there at some stage prior to his marriage to my great great grandmother. I
do not know if this was his first marriage, but he was 59 when he married my
gggma, which seems to make him a very late starter!
My great grandparents were William Hopkins and Sarah Ann Joseph. My great
grandmother, Sarah Joseph, was a child of Thomas Joseph and Ann Cullis
Sarah Joseph was born 6 Mar 1837, Lidbrook.
There were some very helpful responses from the Forest of Dean list. Here
is an edited summary of their findings, most of which I have been able to
replicate in my own census searches (most of the following is a direct quote
from several list members):
------------------------------
This looks like them in 1851. Thomas Joseph's age seems rather high and
needs to be checked. His occupation of Clerk often meant that a person was a
Clerk in Holy Orders rather than simply a book keeper (Note from me - other
census records show him as a school teacher or accountant).

Piece: 2444 Folio: 0128Schedule: 088
Address: Coalway
JOSEPH Thomas HD M 76 Clerk RAD Llanerhangel [Llanfihangel] (c1775) This
would mean that Thomas was 59 years old when he married!
JOSEPH Ann WI M 40- GLS Coleford (c1811)
JOSEPH Martha DA - 12- GLS Coleford (c1839)
JOSEPH Lewis SO -8- GLS Coleford (c1843)
JOSEPH Thomas SO -5- GLS Coleford (c1846)
JOSEPH William SO -2- GLS Coleford (c1849)
RAD Llanerhangel [Llanfihangel] means that Thomas JOSEPH was born in
Llanfihangel in Radnorshire, Wales. The enumerator has written Llanerhangel
(which does not exist) and the transcriber of the 1851 census on my GFHS
CD-ROM has decided Llanfihangel is most likely the correct place.
Radnorshire is today known as Powys.

Ann Joseph - Sept 1891 Monmouth age 79
Lloyd, it would be wonderful if you could locate a birth record or baptism
for Thomas Joseph for me. I have no idea what faith they followed, so I can
be no help there I am afraid. The family story is that the Josephs were
Jewish, but other members on this list cast very convincing doubt on that
story!
Thank you for any assistance you may be able to give.
Kind regards
John

Hi John
There are four Llanfihangel parishes in Radnorshire.
If you give me as much detail as possible I'll try and check out the Parish
Registers when I'm next in the National Library.

So am I, just lurking until I have time in my life to do more
research.
Still watching in case someone identifies which of the Llanfihangel
villages
my Joseph ancestors come from ;-)
I know from Forest of Dean censuses that my great great grandfather was
born in Llanfihangel, Rad, and his birth year was probably 1775. I got
some
help from this list, but basically I gather I would have to search
parish
records for that year, and that is not easy to do from New Zealand. I have
this stacked away for a rainy day when I retire, but in the meantime I
lurk
on here and Powys "just in case"!
