Gathering the Jewels an Exciting New Website
Gathering the Jewels is a unique and exciting project aiming to put over
20,000
images of Welsh culture and history on the Internet. Museums, libraries and
archives from all over Wales are contributing material to the project, and the
website will include printed material, original documents, maps, photographs,
paintings, artifacts, sound and film clips, and more - a wealth of material
which brings the past to life and adds to the picture we have of our
ancestors
lives. The huge database can be searched in a number of ways, and in addition
a small number of Discovery Trails lead users in a more structured way
through certain topics. Of particular interest to family historians is the
Trail on Discovering Our Own History, which gives examples of the types of
source material to be found in libraries, archives and museums across Wales,
and guidance on how to access further similar material.
The website can be found at
http://www.gtj.org.uk. As yet, only a part of the
final number of images are available, and some of the site is still under
development. Dip into it now for a taste of its amazing contents, and watch
as it grows and develops over the coming months.
