Hi Ellen
Yes - I know lots about John Hamer Greenwood's family.
The Greenwoods were poor farmers in Llanbister in the 1820-1850's
and in common with other Welsh people, some migrated to the dominions
for a better life. I think that John worked with his uncle for
a time then took on any job he could find in building trades
- mixing mortar carrying bricks etc. However by 1870 he had
studied law and set up practice in Whitby. He was born in 1829
so emigrated when he was 21.
He later became Mayor of Whitby 1872-5 and 1883, made and lost
a lot of money, died in 1902, leaving widow and 7 children.
The local historian has written a book about the history of
Whitby - in which there is a chapter about the Greenwood family.
I think it would be difficult to establish connections with your
Richard Lewis - depends on where this farm was near Toronto - and
whether there are any domicile records of him in this part of
Canada. (I'm unfamiliar with Canadian records especially censuses)
Hope this helps
Richard
ps None of the Greenwood family moved into the States, though
John Hamer Greenwood did marry into a US family which had been on
the side of the British in the War of Independence and fled to
Canada!!

Hi Richard,
I would say that your John Hamer Greenwood and Richard Lewis probably
knew one another altho I don't know just how old Richard was when he
left for Canada,. 18 at the most. He joined an older brother who was
working on a farm near Toronto but that is all I know. Do you know much
about your John Greenwood? Richard moved to Wisconsin around 1870 I
think. The George family was living in another county but somehow they
must have gotten together because Richard married Anna George in 1875 in
Beatrice. Just wish I knew the details of how they got together.
