Hi,
My g/greatgrandfather, David JONES was a farmer born in Llanfachreth - or is it
Llanvareth? - Radnorshire.
His son, David Thomas JONES was born in Llanfachreth in 1851.
The 1881 census return shows David Jones, 60yrs. and his wife, Jane, also 60 yrs living at
Caerhedydd, Llanfachreth. They were still there for the 1891 census.
David Thomas JONES married Mary Anna REES on 1st February, 1871 at Temple Church,
Bristol.
He was employed by the Great Western Railway, Bristol, as an engine driver/gas fitter and
was seconded to Victoria, Australia, when that state commenced building its railways.
Family argument caused him to turn his back on his family and according to my grandfather,
Watkin Richelieu JONES, was not heard from again.
I can't find him on the 1881 or 1891 census returns.
A David JONES came to Victoria as an unassisted immigrant on the Orizaba in 1896.
I'm not sure that he is the one.
We have been looking for him for over thirty years.
Perhaps someone can help.
Marion O'Sullivan.
Australia.
