Dear Huw,
You are doing a good job!
My only comment is that I do not think that Theo. Beynon was the first Head
of Fronwen School. My recollection is that he came to Fronwen after his
service in the Great War, but I may be wrong. He retired about 1946-9 and
assuming he was then 65 he would have been born about 1881-1884 and about
30-33 years old in 1914 - a bit young for a headmaster at that time? I have
thought that he was appointed Head on his return from the War.
It is noteworthy that at least three headmasters in valley schools were
awarded MCs.in the Great War Theo. Beynon, Lloyd Jones and Jacob Jones: it
would be interesting to see the citations - I do know that Jacob Jones's was
for conspicuous service note a bravery award.
Best wishes,
Bert

Subject: [WLS-OGMORE-VALLEY] Help with Fronwen School Heads
Hi All,
Trying to put together a comprehensive list of all the haeds of
the Valley`s Schools and whilst we have varying amounts of data on most,
we do not have anything at all on Fronwen School:-(
From the list of images we have of the teachers in Fronwen, some dated,
some not, I have put an estimated lidst together below, with some of my
reasoning, which you may agree with or may have better evidence to the
contrary:-)
1914
School opens, Theo Beynon, MC, JP appointed Head?
1934
First dated image with names:
Theo Beynon, MC, JP, D.C. Williams, Miss Maggie Joseph, Mrs Dilys Weston
(Nee Pierce), Mr Ivor Prosser, Mr Stan Jones, Mr Winston Rees and Miss
Evelyn James.
Next image is not dated but I am guessing at late 1940` with Lloyd
Jones, MC as head, and the image also contains older images of: Miss
Maggie Joseph, Mrs Dilys Weston (Nee Pierce), and D.C. Williams. The
other named teachers are: Mrs Bye, Mrs Pivot, Mrs Sharp and Mrs Rowe.
Next image again not dated but I belive Trefor Jones is the head with
the following other teachers named: D.C Williams, Bernice Davey, Cyril
Anderson and Mrs Aerona Llewellyn (Nee Bishop). There are also two cooks
present, Mrs Megan Waters (Nee Evans) and Mrs Megan Budd.
Mrs Aerona Llewellyn is also in the Aber School images from 1965 so
these images with Aerona at Fronwen must be prior to 1965.
The next image again has Trefor Jones in the Head position with only
D.C. Wiliams, Bernice Davey, Dilys Davies and a Miss or Mrs John in the
picture.
Next image is Trefor Jones, with an older Aerona Llewellyn and Cyril
Anderson, together with Megan Waters (Nee Evans) and Iris Lee.
Next is the first colour image with Trefor Jones, D.C. Williams, Cyril
Anderson, Bernice Davey and Aerona Llewellyn.
Next image is probably from the late 1970`s with Virgil Handley as head
and the following teachers listed:
Sherryl Jones, Glyn Miller, Ann Rees (moved to Aber as head in 1988),
Glenys Knight, Cyril Anderson, Linda Lewis, Susan Jenkins, Haulen
Hughes, Denise Duggan and Barrie Lewis.
We then have a dated (1981) image with Virgil Handley as head and the
following teachers: Susan Jenkins, Haulwen Hughes, Denise Duggan, Linda
Lewis, Ann Rees, Sherryl Jones, Glyn Miller, Barrie Lewis and Glenys Knight.
Next we see Barrie Lewis as head and the following teachers: Sally
Hearing, John Morgan, Glenys Knight, Sussan Jenkins and Barbara Thorpe.
And finally we have a 1993 image with Barrie Lewis as head and the
folloing staff: Ros Hobbs*, Susan Jenkins, Phil Davies*, Annete
Matthews, Meryl Cadogan, Lyn Edwards, Lesley Trotman, Llinos Gwilym,
Sally Hearing*, Julie Bishop and Lorraine Nutt*.
(The staff marked with an asterisk are now at Ogmore Vale Primary School).
The final headteacher in 2003 when Fronwen finally closed was Sally
Hearing who had been acting head since 2000 I believe.
Any help (or corrections) with names and dates of the heads would be
gratefull recieved.....
If you go to (

School under School Albums I have uploaded the images we have missing
names for in the images we have of Fronwen School Staff.....
