Hi All,
As a result of more consultations with the schools we now have
permision to copy to CD Rom the following School Admission
Registers.........
Already announced
Aber Boys 1911 -1935
Tynewydd Girls 1913 -1930
Tynewydd Infants 1923 - 1940
Tynewydd Girls & Infants 1940 - 1962
Tynewydd Mixed Juniors 1962 -1983
New:
Ogmore Vale Nursery School 1947 - 2003 (Complete)
Fronwen School - 7 Registers dates unknown
Nantymoel School - Unknown as yet
Aber Infants - Unknown as yet.
The current time scale for this project is to get the books to Archive CD
Books for them to scan in April, all books we had previuosly loaned from
Tynewydd School have been returned in preparation for a "Heritage Project"
they are presenting to thre judges at the end of March.
We are currently budgeting £1,500 - £2,000 to facilitate the scanning of
the
books (we are anticipating around 20 volumes) and we are now busily
sourcing
grants.
We think this may be a unique resource in the South Wales Valleys where
all
the extant school registers will be available on CD Rom for the first
time.
(Unless anyone knows differently of course!)
The History Society are actively involved in helping the four local
schools
that will be closing at the end of the Summer Term 2003, namely,
Ogmore
Nursery in Park Avenue, Aber Infants, Fronwen Primary and Tynewydd Junior,
all of which will be absorbed by the new "Ogmore Vale Primary School"
which
officially opens its doors in Sep 2003.
The building is well on track for that event and we have forged some
excellent links with the new Head Teacher, Mr Paul BOOTH, who has a great
interest in History and is working with us to promote the Valley History
where possible.
The first impact of our partnership is the Master Clock from the Ogmore
Valley Workmans Hall (whose foundations were washed away in 1981), will be
erected in the Main Hall of the new school after being refurbished by the
Cardiff Clock Company. Paid for by the Society and arranged by Bert JONES.
The second and most dramatic impact will be the fruition of 10 years worth
of research when we will be erecting a memorial to all the Men, Women and
Children that have been killed in the mining industry in the Valley since
th
first accident in 1867 through to the mines closure in 1984.
This will be a significantly sized memorial (probably in Granite) and will
again, with Paul`s kind permmission, be erected within the confines of the
school.
There will be more details when known as we also envisage this being a
Community Event on the scale of our Dedivcation Memorial Service held on
the
07th Jan 2003, as we again belive this to be a "First"
amongst the South
Wales Mining valleys.
It isn`t too late to add any names to the memorial as we are most
definitely
still in the planing stage, albiet close to the final design and
costing
bits, but any info you have will be greatly recieved by us, and the best
method will probably be to send the info via this list, that way not only
will you all see the data, but the main co-ordinator for the project, Mr
Bert JONES can check against the data on the 250+ names gathered so far.
Please include the source where possible and we really don`t mind any
duplicates, much easier than missing someone out.
Before anyone goes to the trouble of extracting the names from the "Mining
Deaths Index 1851- 1914" by Ian Winstanley, that`s already been done.
All our merchandise is selling well, with stocks of the "5 Colliries Tea
Towels" almost exhausted, only a few "Golden Jubilee" mugs left and all
the
"Wyndham Colliery" Pints and ½ Pint Glasses are now sold
with small qtys
left of "Penllwyngwent" and "Ocean Western".
