Hi All,
As many of you will know Tynewydd held an Open Day today and everyone
was welcome.
It was a very succesful day with many desreving praises being commented on
the amount and quality of work put in by both pupils and staff.
I was there all day (and met several members of this list there) and
thoroughly enjoyed myself talking about the history of the valley and
helping people to loacte themselves and family in the school Regsisters,
which I took along for the day.
This isn`t why I am writing, as during the day I was invited to the "Old
Storeroom", opposite the Head masters office when I attended Tynewydd.
After a little difficulty with the lock, the ever helpful caretaker Mrs
Megan Jones and I had a wander through the large amounts of documenst stored
along with the dust........
My reward was an absolute gem of a find; one dusty old box containing the
missing registers which I believe makes virtually a complete set from 1871
to 2003.
The six registers "found" today:
Tynewydd School (When at University Buildings, Tynewydd Row)
20 Mar 1871 - 19 Oct 1882 (112)
23 Oct 1882 - 30 Jul 1900 (116)
(Moved to the *new* school on top of School road in 1893)
Llandyfodwg Craigrhiwglyn Board School
Mixed Juniors & Infants (Boys & Girls)
15 Oct 1883 - 11 Jun 1912 (114)
Tynewydd Boys School (Caedu)
11 Dec 1924 - 03 Sep 1951 (50)
Tynewydd Girls School
02 Sep 1930 - 10 Jan 1961 (76)
Aber Boys School
(Later Tynewydd Council School (01 Sep 1952)
24 Jul 1935 -01 Sep 1959 (66)
On top of that we also discovered a written history of the Tynewydd Schools
produced in 1975 which is an absolute mine of information.
And one or two other snippets:
1957 Radio Licenec (£1) with the old Waters Street post office stamp on it.
A leaflet asking the valley to raise £50,000 from 07th to the 14th Mar 1942
to sponsor the adoption of HMS Quannet, an Auxiliary Naval Craft.
Huge amount of money in 1942 but we already know from the council minute
books (Availbale from Friday) that they did actually achieve this!
